Ruth Wilson

BIO

Wilson’s early screen work included the sitcom Suburban Shootout (2006–2007). In 2007, she appeared in Agatha Christie’s Marple: Nemesis (ITV) and the BBC drama Capturing Mary. Her stage work that year included playing Tanya in Philistines at the Royal National Theatre. In 2008, she appeared in the BBC2 sitcom Freezing, narrated the BBC4 documentary The Polish Ambulance Murders, and starred in the Channel 4 dramatized documentary The Doctor Who Hears Voices.



In 2009, Wilson appeared as Stella Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire at the Donmar Warehouse and played No. 313 in the television miniseries The Prisoner. She starred as Queenie in Small Island, which aired on BBC One in 2009 and on PBS in 2010. From 2010 to 2019, she appeared in the BBC series Luther, returning for its fifth series. In 2011, she starred in the title role of Anna Christie at the Donmar Warehouse.

From 2014 to 2018, Wilson starred as Alison Bailey in the Showtime series The Affair. In 2015, she made her Broadway debut in Constellations at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. Her film work includes I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House (2016). From 2016 to 2017, she starred in Hedda Gabler at the Royal National Theatre.

In 2018, Wilson starred in and executive produced the BBC miniseries Mrs Wilson. She portrayed Marisa Coulter in the HBO/BBC series His Dark Materials, winning a BAFTA Cymru Award in 2020. In 2020, she was announced to star in the filmed version of the play Oslo. In 2023, she was announced to star as Emily Maitlis in the series A Very Royal Scandal.

She most recently appeared in A Moon for the Misbegotten at the Almeida Theatre.
