Riccardo Hernandez has received several nominations for his work in theater. He was nominated for Outstanding Scenic Design of a Musical at the Drama Desk Awards for Suffs. At the Tony Awards, he was nominated for Best Scenic Design of a Musical for both Lempicka and Jagged Little Pill. He also received an Obie Award nomination for Design, recognizing his Sustained Excellence of Set Design. Additionally, he was nominated for Outstanding Set Design for a Play at the Drama Desk Awards for Red Speedo. Hernandez earned a nomination for Outstanding Set Design, Resident Production at the Helen Hayes Awards for Pullman Porter Blues, and was nominated for Outstanding Set Design - Musical at the Drama Desk Awards for Radiant Baby.
