The world premiere of filmmaker/playwright Ethan Coen's A PLAY IS A POEM currently lives on the Mark Taper Forum stage, produced by Center Theatre Group, in association with Atlantic Theater Company. A collection of five short plays from Ethan Coen's unique take on Americana had been connected together by the interstitial musical musings of Nellie McKay. Neil Pope directs the talented ensemble of Ro Boddie, Max Casella, Micaela Diamond, Peter Jacobson, Jason Kravits, McKay, Saul Rubinek, Miriam Silverman, Joey Slotnick, Sam Vartholomeos, and C.J. Wilson. I had the opportune chance to ask one of Ethan Coen's always-working players Peter Jacobson a few queries.

Performances have begun for the world premiere of Ethan Coen's “A Play Is a Poem” at Center Theatre Group/Mark Taper Forum. Atlantic Theater Company has announced its 2019-2020 season productions.

Center Theatre Group Artistic Director Michael Ritchie has set the 2019 - 2020 seasons at both the Mark Taper Forum and Kirk Douglas Theatre. Together, the seasons offer a deep sampling of the best in modern American theatre including the continuation of Block Party, which celebrates the rich array of theatre produced every year in intimate theatres throughout Los Angeles.

Chicago Dramatists has announced its summer line up of writing courses!  All classes this summer session will be held online, via Zoom, and they are offering a record number of new classes.  For the summer session, they are offering a 20% discount on select classes, when students use promo code SummerQuarter20 at checkout.  This offer is only good when applied before June 8.  (The courses that make use of this discount are specified below).  

Atlantic Theater Company has announced initial casting for the world premiere production of A Play is a Poem, a collection of one-acts by Academy Award winner Ethan Coen (Almost an Evening; The Ballad of Buster Scruggs), directed by Neil Pepe (Atlantic Artistic Director, Broadway's American Buffalo) and produced in association with Center Theatre Group. The production has also announced a new first preview date. A Play is a Poem will now begin previews Thursday, May 14th and will open Monday, June 1st for a limited engagement through Sunday, June 21st Off-Broadway at Atlantic Stage 2 (330 West 16th Street).

This year's Artios Awards have honored Broadway plays and musicals like 'Jagged Little Pill,' 'Moulin Rouge!', 'The Inheritance,' 'Slave Play,' 'Tina: The Tina Turner Musical' with nominations.

Ruth Bratt of Showstopper The Improvised Musical was his first guest star.

Cabaret-rock singer-songwriter Nellie McKay brings her uniquely eccentric blend of pop, rock, jazz and hip-hop to Club Helsinki Hudson on Sunday, March 8, at 8pm.

The Spring 2021 Season offers three moving, one-person performances: Colman Domingo’s A Boy and His Soul, directed by Craig Wallace; Lucy Alibar’s Throw Me on the Burnpile and Light Me Up, directed by Round House Artistic Director Ryan Rilette; and Young Jean Lee’s We’re Gonna Die, directed by Paige Hernandez.

Casting is set for Studio Theatre's production of Pipeline, playwright Dominique Morisseau's searing drama about the school-to-prison pipeline and a mother desperately trying to keep her son from becoming ensnared in it. The production runs January 15-February 16, 2020 and is directed by Awoye Timpo. Starring are DC theatre favorite Justin Weaks (Studio's Curve of Departure) as high school student Omari and Andrea Harris Smith making her Studio debut as his mother, public school teacher Nya. In its recent People Issue, Washington City Paper's called Weaks a 'standout,' going on to say: 'D.C. theater audiences love Justin Weaks. ...Weaks came to D.C. for a job about four years ago, not expecting to stay. But he kept getting cast in shows, and lucky for local theatergoers, he's still here.'

Center Theatre Group will continue its Artist Series, Audience Talks and Stage Talks programs in the 2019 a?" 2020 season. These engagement programs offer additional ways for theatregoers to start conversations about the work they have seen or will experience on stage at the Mark Taper Forum and Kirk Douglas Theatre.

Center Theatre Group will continue its FreePlay program for the 2019-2020 season. Anyone who is 25 years old or younger will be able to reserve free tickets to the first preview of all Center Theatre Group productions at the Mark Taper Forum and Kirk Douglas Theatre as well as select shows at the Ahmanson Theatre. Reservations are free if made in-person at the box office. There will be a $5 per ticket handling fee to reserve online at CTGLA.org/FreePlay or over the phone by calling (213) 628-2772.
