BWW Review: Tony Award-winning Revival of RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN'S OKLAHOMA! Plays N Photo BWW Review: Tony Award-winning Revival of RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN'S OKLAHOMA! Plays Nashville This Week
by Jeffrey Ellis - May 4, 2022

Yet perhaps at no time during its vaunted and venerated history has Oklahoma! been so polarizing as it has become now, thanks to the 2019 Broadway revival directed by Daniel Fish which is touring the provinces. Setting up shop on the expansive stage of Andrew Jackson Hall at Nashville’s Tennessee Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, May 3, for an eight-performance run through next Mother’s Day, Fish’s compelling vision for the timeless work has elicited more heated conversations and varied responses than one might expect from a 79-year-old warhorse of a musical.

This ain't your mama's Oklahoma! It ain't Rodgers and Hammerstein's, either. It's what you'd get if Andy Warhol and Robert Mapplethorpe dropped acid and decided to re-write a classic of musical theatre.

by Nicole Ackman - Mar 30, 2022

This is not your grandparents‚Äô OKLAHOMA. During intermission, I heard one woman ask another, ‚ÄúIs this the Oklahoma you remember?‚ÄĚ and it‚Äôs certainly not. If you‚Äôve ever found the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic musical boring or problematic, then this is the revival for you.

The national tour of Daniel Fish’s reimagined Oklahoma!, now playing at the Forrest Theatre, is Oklahoma! like you’ve never seen it. Darker and sultrier than you ever imagined Rodgers & Hammerstein’s magnum opus could be, this production makes an almost 80-year-old musical feel not only modern, but dangerous.

BWW Review: OKLAHOMA! at Shea's Buffalo Photo BWW Review: OKLAHOMA! at Shea's Buffalo
by Michael Rabice - Feb 16, 2022

In March of 1943, the audience that poured into New York’s St. James Theatre had no idea they were witnessing the the birth of the musical comedy as we know it today. The maiden production of composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein’s OKLAHOMA! would change the face of Broadway forever. Flash forward 80 years and audiences once again had no idea what they would encounter in Director Daniel Fish’s dark disjointed OKLAHOMA!
