Based on the 20th Century Fox motion picture, with a screenplay by Gary Ross and Anne Spielberg

The 1987 hit movie featuring Tom Hanks bursts onstage in this vibrant, funny and touching musical. When frustrated adolescent Josh Baskin wishes he were "big" and wakes up the next morning a 30-year-old man, he discovers there's much more to being an adult than he's bargained for-and learns we must all grow up at our own pace, in our own time. A witty, moving, insightful book and a dazzling, energetic, heartfelt, contemporary score make this already classic motion picture fantasy an unforgettable theatrical experience. 'Big' is satisfyingly good. The music of David Shire, the lyrics of Richard Maltby Jr., the book by Jerome Weidman and the choreography by Susan Stroman extol all the values of the grand tradition of musicals. Twain Debut New Song at NPR, Announce Double-EP Due January 25
by BWW News Desk - Oct 16, 2018

Twain has released their first new music since 2017's critically-lauded Rare Feeling. Twain's singer and songwriter Mt. Davidson tells us 'This song is about the freedom-feeling of allowing Love its natural Death.' NPR All Songs Considered premiered 'Young God (gotta lotta feeling)' today, noting 'Twain songs retain a live energy with little editing. Like an old cassette, the sounds on these records are limited to a mild and pleasant midrange and swathed in a lisping hiss. Even as 'Young God' rises from its quiet, glimmering opening to a thumping, full band apotheosis, the coloring of that sound frames it like a photo in an album.'  (more...)

BWW Review: Theater Uncorked Flies High With ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST
by Nancy Grossman - Oct 16, 2018

Theater Uncorked returned to the First Church Cambridge this past weekend for two performances of a staged reading of ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST, a 1963 play by Dale Wasserman, based on the novel of the same name by Ken Kesey. Lest the inmates run the asylum, the strong directorial hand of Bobbi Steinbach kept the chaos under control, presumably in a kinder, gentler way than Nurse Ratched's managerial style. Her staging made it feel like so much more than a reading, especially in the group scenes, where the bonding and banter among the patients rang true. There was nary a weak link in the ensemble, and the leading players were so strong in their characterizations that my mind drew a blank when trying to imagine anyone else as Ratched (Kerry A. Dowling), Randle P. McMurphy (Gene Dante), or Chief Bromden (Pedro Figueroa). (more...)

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA: Why Are Its PHANS So Obsessed With Andrew Lloyd Webber's Musical?
by Jeffrey Ellis - Oct 16, 2018

What about the story keeps audiences coming back again and again to see The Phantom of the Opera? Is it the lushly romantic score composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber? Or could it be the mysteriously intriguing and sumptuously romantic Gaston Leroux story? (more...)

BWW Review: SMT's LEGALLY BLONDE Could Be 'So Much Better'
by Jay Irwin - Oct 15, 2018

Recently (and I do mean recently) another company in town did a concert staging of "Legally Blonde" utilizing actors of color in roles that they might not normally be cast including an African American "Elle". So, I questioned the logic when I heard that Seattle Musical Theater was doing the same thing right on its heels. Sure, the other one was just a concert (although so well done that it felt like a full staging) and only for four performances so maybe they just want to capitalize on that momentum with a full staging with sets and costumes and everything. Unfortunately, the Seattle Musical Theatre production of "Legally Blonde" feels so misdirected, half-assed and underdone that the only similarities are the diversity in the casting and the name.
