Young Alumni Commissioning Project Award Recipients Announced

George Mason University's College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) has announced the second round of Young Alumni Commissioning Project Award Recipients. The three alumni were chosen based on the artistic excellence, career impact, and feasibility of their proposals and will receive financial, marketing, and production support to have their projects presented by the College at a Mason venue during the 2020-2021 season.

IABD to Provide Emergency Relief Funds to the Black Dance Community Impacted by the Health Crisis

The Performance Interface Lab was founded in late March 2020 in response to the closure of traditional theatrical venues from the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing social distancing measures. Founders decided that rather than respond to a paradigm shift after it had occurred, they wanted to be at the forefront testing out how we'd need to adapt.

Arena Stage Creates Masks for Children's National Hospital

Arena Stage is stepping up to provide relief during the current health crisis. Their costume shop is currently sewing face masks from home that are being donated to the Children's National Hospital. Fabric and materials were delivered to each stitcher and members of the shop are sewing from Silver Spring to Mount Vernon.

Theatre people pre-date the gig economy.  Itinerant performers entertained villages centuries before the first theatre building was constructed.  And Shakespeare's Globe Theatre often had to lay off the whole company because of epidemics of plague.  Now, in the Washington, DC area, ninety theatre companies have had to cease operations because of covid-19.  Many of those who work in them as actors, designers, lighting, sound, and costume staff, directors, and box office personnel do not have benefits such as sick leave and health insurancea?'they just get paid show to show.  Fifty productions had to be cancelled and twenty more, which were about to open, never will.
