“The role requires quite a range of acting; it calls for all the colors of true love, as well as grief, anger frustration, the whole spectrum playing out in the two-day time period of the show. And Bernstein’s score is groundbreaking. It’s full of so many colors that accurately express the emotions and subtexts of all the characters through these little motifs. It stands alone; it’s unique in style.”

Epstein, who noted he and Coleman have collectively directed more than 20 productions of ROMEO AND JULIET, said this production explores the pursuit of delight within a difficult and warring world. “Shakespeare is a master of integrating delight and this play is the archetype of that,” he said. “So, we’re asking: In a world where the common language is about conflict and strife, how can delight make room for itself?”

Quite simply, this is an imaginative production with the story told as Shakespeare would have interpreted many elements today. This ingeniously crafted production will appeal to both seasoned Shakespeare lovers and those unfamiliar with the intricacies of the plot.

What did our critic think of ROMEO AND JULIET at Canadian Stage? The romantic tragedy and big emotions of Shakespeare’s famous tale of star-crossed lovers are difficult to successfully present in an age of irony. This is especially true in outdoor summer theatre, where the atmosphere lends itself more to a fun romp than heartbreak. But a tale of intractable families who nurture their hatred over everything else should feel sadly immediate regardless of where it’s performed.
