Magnificent Bastard Productions Presents SHIT-FACED SHAKESPEARE: MACBETH

Double, double tequila and trouble, Shit-faced Shakespeare is back for its eighth Edinburgh Fringe. Magnificent Bastards have performed their sell-out productions all across the globe and now they return to the scene of the crime with their band of merry players (one of whom a little too merry), bringing the Scottish play back to its rightful home at McEwan Hall in the heart of Edinburgh. Expect wicked wives, bloody battles, wayward witches and sprightly spirits (of both the ghoulish and alcoholic varietal).

In a revealing look at how we tell our own stories, interdisciplinary digital artist Mats Staub has asked hundreds of participants around the world to recount the year they turned 21, and then played the audio back to them three months later. Including new interviews with Edinburgh residents, the film of each participant listening to their own memories creates a tapestry of stories, sharing insight not just into the experiences of becoming an adult, but in how we deflect, joke, minimise and make light of our memories in the telling.

Making use of director Reetta Honkakoski's personal experience of cults, this absorbing ensemble piece examines the seductive grip of dictatorship. Propelled forward by the energy and movement of a highly talented, international ensemble, The Desk sees six performers recreate the rigorous power structures underpinning dogmatic organisations through tersely performed physical theatre. The show focuses on five students at five desks, and one teacher who presides over them, to look at universal mechanisms used to indoctrinate, dominate and subdue.

Honey is a freelance journalist, single mother of four (and a half), daughter of a disappointed mother, friend to the nay-sayers, and lover to imperfect men. In search of some sense of control and balance, she's tried counselling, she's tried tequila, and now she's going to try a new talking cure she's designed for herself. Honey takes us on a humour-filled journey alongside a woman who's figuring out how to tell her own story - and make it work for her.

Weaving together poetic text and movement, Alexandrina Hemsley and Seke Chimutengwende come together to retell an Afrofuturist history of the universe from the big bang through to the universe's death. Seke and Alexandrina combine elements of science fiction with personal narrative to probe the holes in our understanding of the past, speculating on how to be with their bodies that carry histories of marginalisation and anti-blackness. Taking the personal and projecting it onto a cosmic scale, Black Holes explores the potential and problematics of Afrofuturism.
ALI AND ALPO Makes UK Premiere with Edinburgh Fringe

In 2017, plans to premiere a new collaboration between Finnish choreographer Alpo Aaltokoski and Iraqi oud lute musician Ali Alawad were almost wrecked when Alawad fled the country just two weeks before the show's opening. His asylum application had been rejected by Finland, and he decided to flee rather than risk deportation.

Marking Complicite's return to the Fringe after more than twenty years, and the first time they have made theatre for primary school aged children, this co-production with Polka Theatre is a fun and frenetic adaptation of a beloved children's book. Long-term Complicite collaborator, Catherine Alexander, directs I'll Take You to Mrs Cole!, fusing original Ska music and animation to tell the story of Ashley, the child of a hard-working single mother from Barbados. Exhausted by her child's endless imagination, she threatens them with a visit to their terrifying neighbour whenever they misbehave. But one day Ashley is magnetically drawn to Mrs Cole's door and taken into her noisy, messy, chaotic world… A story of cultural differences, fear of the unknown and the power of a child's imagination. I'll Take You to Mrs Cole! is one of two shows Complicite brings to the Fringe this year along with The Last of the Pelican Daughters, a co-production with The Wardrobe Ensemble.
