BIO
Kline won a scholarship to the Juilliard School’s drama division in 1970. In 1972, he co-founded the City Center Acting Company (now The Acting Company), touring nationally in classical repertory productions and The Robber Bridegroom. He appeared on the soap opera Search for Tomorrow (1976) and returned to the stage in Dance on a Country Grave (1977). He won his first Tony Award for On the Twentieth Century (1978) and a second Tony for The Pirates of Penzance (1980), later reprising the role in the film version (1983). His New York Shakespeare Festival credits included Richard III (1983), Henry V (1984), Hamlet (1986, 1990; also director), and Much Ado About Nothing (1988).
He made his film debut in Sophie’s Choice (1982). His 1980s–1990s film work included The Big Chill (1983), Silverado (1985), Cry Freedom (1987), and A Fish Called Wanda (1989), winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the latter. Additional roles included The January Man (1989), I Love You to Death (1990), Soapdish (1991), Grand Canyon (1991), Chaplin (1992), Dave (1993), French Kiss (1995), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996, voice), The Ice Storm (1997), In & Out (1997, Golden Globe nomination), Wild Wild West (1999), and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1999).
In the 2000s, he voiced Tulio in The Road to El Dorado (2000) and appeared in Life as a House (2001), The Hunchback of Notre Dame II (2002, voice), The Emperor’s Club (2002), and De-Lovely (2004, Golden Globe nomination). Other film roles included A Prairie Home Companion (2006), The Pink Panther (2006), Definitely, Maybe (2008), No Strings Attached (2011), The Conspirator (2010), and Darling Companion (2012).
His later stage work included Henry IV on Broadway (2003, Tony nomination), King Lear (Public Theater), Cyrano de Bergerac (Broadway, filmed 2008), and As You Like It (film, 2006; SAG Award in 2008). He returned to Broadway in Present Laughter (2017), winning the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play.
Recent work includes Beauty and the Beast (2017), voicing Calvin Fischoeder on Bob’s Burgers (2011–present) and The Bob’s Burgers Movie (2022), and the Apple TV+ series Disclaimer (announced 2021).
