Liz Mikel BIO

Liz Mikel is a multifaceted artist that has been a staple in the DFW Arts scene for
more than 30 years. Her love of performing, warmth, magnetic presence and
dynamic voice has endeared her to audiences worldwide. Like a painter with a
blank canvas, she makes every performance an original.
An accomplished actress and vocalist, Liz has transitioned seamlessly from stage
to television, studio recordings, cabaret and feature films. Ms. Mikel has toured
both nationally and abroad and has worked alongside some of the industry's
biggest celebrities.
Her recurring role as Corrina Williams on NBC's Emmy Award Winning Series,
Friday Night Lights, tugged the heartstrings of viewers and critics alike. She had
audiences laughing in the star packed, Martin Lawrence blockbuster, Welcome Home
Roscoe Jenkins, playing the wife of the late Michael Clark Duncan. She was cast by
comedian/director, Ben Stiller, and body slammed him in, The Secret Life Of Walter
Mitty. And director Tate Taylor, (The Help), handpicked Mikel to portray Gertrude
Saunders opposite the late, great Chadwick Boseman in the James Brown biopic,
Get On Up.
Mikel received rave reviews in both her Off-Broadway and Broadway debuts as
the all knowing muse/madam, Hetaira, in the Douglas CarterBeane/Lewis Flinn
musical, Lysistrata Jones.
Liz had the prestigious honor of being personally invited by Activist/ Playwright, V
(formerly Eve Ensler), to participate in the star-studded 10th anniversary of the Vagina Monologues. In addition to performing her selected monologue, she was also
chosen by Ensler to stand in for Oprah Winfrey in her absence. Mikel joined Ensler
for the World Premiere of her comedy, O.P.C., at the Tony Award winning
American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Mass.
In 2018, the Tony Award winner sought out Liz for yet another premiere. V
teamed up with the Abingdon Theatre Company to bring her trio of short plays,
Fruit Trilogy, to the Lucille Lortel Theatre. The play, which deals with the
exploitation and eventual reclaiming of the female body, came on the
20th anniversary of her groundbreaking work, The Vagina Monologues.
As a vocalist, Liz has opened for Erykah Badu, Branford Marsalis, Issac Hayes,
Joan Rivers, Gennifer Flowers, Chrisette Michele, Ledisi and her friend, Blues
legend, Lucky Peterson. In 2017, she joined Peterson for a special New Year’s
Eve performance at Le Duc des Lombards in Paris, France.
New York's Jim Caruso added Liz's powerhouse prowess to his Best Of Cast Party
at Town Hall alongside Jane Monheit, Lisa Lampanelli, Linda Lavin and Marilyn
Maye.

Review: 1776 Delivers The Founding 'Mothers' At Theatre Under the Stars

I teasingly have been calling this 1776 - THE FOUNDING MOTHERS EDITION all week, and it is finally here at the Hobby Center brought in by Theatre Under the Stars. This is a New York cast hitting Houston for a three night stop of a national tour. My question is, does it really make that much of a statement? The script for the show remains what it has been since 1776 debuted on Broadway back in 1969.

1776 Comes to Kansas City at Starlight Theatre This Month

Prepare to party like it’s 1776 with a witty retelling of our founding fathers' stories and how our great nation came to be! This production was developed and premiered by the American Repertory Theater at Harvard University before playing on Broadway with Roundabout Theatre Company at the American Airlines Theatre.

Interview: Theatre Life with Liz Mikel

Today’s subject Liz Mikel is currently living her theatre life on tour playing Dr. Benjamin Franklin, delegate from Pennsylvania, in the Roundabout Theatre Company production of 1776. The show is currently running through July 16th at Kennedy Center’s Eisenhower Theatre.

Review: 1776 at Kennedy Center

1776 is now being given a triumphantly moving and vigorous radically deconstructed interpretation at the Kennedy Center. There are many fans already who are firm believers in the message of this uniquely conceived musical but this production will lead them even further into intellectual and sensory depth.

1776 Comes to 5th Avenue Theatre

The national tour of 1776 makes its premiere in Seattle at The 5th Avenue Theatre August 2-6, 2023. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at The 5th Avenue Theatre’s website, over the phone, or by visiting the box office.

Page and Paulus' Revival of 1776 Offers a New Perspective on The Birth Of A Nation

Imagine walking into Jackson Hall on opening night, as I did, thinking, “Why did the directors reimagine this pleasant, if somewhat plodding, old-school musical with an ensemble of multi-ethnic women, trans and non-binary actors cast in the roles of America’s founding fathers?” Then leaving the theater after the final curtain wondering, “why on earth would anyone ever feel the need to cast the roles with men?” and reveling in the fact that 1776 tapped into my heart in unexpected ways, eliciting an emotional and, I daresay, patriotic response.

THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW, A CHRISTMAS CAROL, and More Set For Dallas Theater Center's 2023-24 Season

Review: 1776 MUSICAL SHINES A LIGHT ON THE PRESENT at Broadway San Jose

What did our critic think of 1776 MUSICAL SHINES A LIGHT ON THE PRESENT at Broadway San Jose?

Review: 1776 at Ahmanson Theatre

What did our critic think of 1776 at Ahmanson Theatre? In contemporary theater - as in life - optics matter. A lot. Given current trends in theatrical programing, the musical 1776 would probably never get staged. Granted, Sherman Edwards and Peter Stone's 1969 take on the sturm and drang surrounding the Second Continental Congress's decision to form a new nation may be a patriotic Tony Award-winner.

Review: 1776 at CIBC Theatre is a Refreshing-Lee Modern Take on a Classic

1776 is a perfect example of a modern adaptation done right. Virtually everyone growing up in the United States learns the story of our country's birth: The founding fathers, the struggle for independence from Britain, and the scourge of slavery that was shamefully part of our fledgling nation. 1776 gives us a deep dive into this history, complete with nuanced political debates and glimpses into the personal lives of the signatories of the Declaration of Independence.
