Kate Prince is a British choreographer, director, and founder of the dance company ZooNation. Born in 1974, Prince grew up in London and began dancing at a young age. She went on to study at the Laban Centre and later at the London Contemporary Dance School.
Prince's career in choreography began in 2000, when she created the hip-hop dance company ZooNation. The group quickly gained recognition for their innovative and energetic performances, which blended elements of street dance, contemporary dance, and theater. In 2006, Prince directed and choreographed ZooNation's first full-length production, "Into the Hoods," which premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The show went on to become one of the longest-running productions in West End history, receiving numerous awards and nominations, including an Olivier Award for Best New Musical.
Prince's success with "Into the Hoods" led to further opportunities in the theater world. She went on to choreograph and direct several other productions, including "Some Like It Hip Hop" (2011) and "The Mad Hatter's Tea Party" (2014), both of which received critical acclaim. In 2016, Prince directed and choreographed "Sylvia," a dance-theater piece inspired by the life of Sylvia Pankhurst, a British suffragette. The production premiered at the Old Vic Theatre in London and was praised for its powerful storytelling and innovative choreography.
In addition to her work in theater, Prince has also choreographed for film and television. She worked on the 2010 film "StreetDance 3D" and its sequel, "StreetDance 2," as well as the 2016 film "Bridget Jones's Baby." She has also choreographed for several television shows, including "So You Think You Can Dance" and "The X Factor."
Prince's contributions to the world of dance and theater have not gone unnoticed. In 2013, she was awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for her services to dance. She has also been recognized with several other awards and nominations, including a Critics' Circle National Dance Award for Best Choreography (2011) and an Olivier Award for Best Theatre Choreographer (2017).
Most recently, Prince directed and choreographed "Message In A Bottle," a dance-theater production set to the music of Sting. The show premiered at Sadler's Wells Theatre in London in February 2020 and was praised for its stunning choreography and emotional storytelling.
