Derrick Baskin Biography
Derrick Baskin received the San Francisco Theatre Critics Circle Award/Lead Actor for Ain't Too Proud at Berkeley Rep. He was last seen in the Oscar-nominated film Marshall and is best known for his role in the critically acclaimed Hulu sitcom Difficult People and his recurring role on Law & Order: SVU. Other film credits include Annie starring Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx; and Anesthesia starring Glenn Close, directed by Tim Blake Nelson. This awardâ€winning actor was last seen onstage in The New York Times Critic's Pick Whorl Inside a Loop and has originated roles in the Tony Awardâ€winning Broadway musicals Memphis; Spelling Bee, where he also earned a Drama Desk Award; and Disney's The Little Mermaid working alongside Oscarâ€, Grammyâ€, and Tony‑winning composer Alan Menken and Pulitzer Prize author Doug Wright. Baskin's concert experience includes performances with Wynton Marsalis, Michael Buble, Wiz Khalifa, and Mariah Carey, and he has written songs on former Beyonce musical director Divinity Roxx's debut album, I'm Possible. Last night, TheatreWorks Silicon Valley received the 2019 Regional Theatre Tony Award at the 73rd Annual Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, hosted by James Corden and featuring a galaxy of stage and screen stars, including Tina Fey, Laura Linney, Bryan Cranston, Adam Driver, Audra McDonald and hundreds of other famed performers, directors, playwrights and designers. Broadway star Danny Burstein (also a TheatreWorks alumnus) welcomed to the stage TheatreWorks Founding Artistic Director Robert Kelley, Executive Director Phil Santora, and TheatreWorks's Trustee Chair Judy Heyboer, where they accepted the nation's highest recognition for a regional theatre.
