BIO
John Leguizamo began his career as a stand-up comedian on the New York nightclub circuit in 1984. He made his television debut in Miami Vice (1986) and appeared in projects including Madonna’s “Borderline” music video (1984), Casualties of War (1989), Die Hard 2 (1990), Hangin’ with the Homeboys (1991), and Regarding Henry (1991). In 1991, he wrote and performed the Off-Broadway one-man show Mambo Mouth, playing seven different characters. He followed with Spic-O-Rama (1993), another solo stage production later adapted for HBO. Film roles during this period included Whispers in the Dark (1992), Super Mario Bros. (1993), and Carlito’s Way (1993).
In 1995, Leguizamo created, wrote, produced, and starred in the Fox sketch comedy series House of Buggin’. He appeared in films including To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995), Executive Decision (1996), Romeo + Juliet (1996), Spawn (1997), The Pest (1997), and Land of the Dead (2005). In 1998, he debuted on Broadway with the solo show Freak, which was later filmed for HBO. He also appeared in Spike Lee’s Summer of Sam (1999).
During the 2000s, Leguizamo starred in the miniseries Arabian Nights (2000), released the comedy album John Leguizamo LIVE (2001), and appeared in Empire (2002). He wrote and performed the stage show Sexaholix... A Love Story (2002). Beginning in 2002, he voiced Sid the Sloth in the Ice Age franchise, reprising the role in multiple sequels and video games. He also voiced Globox in Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc (2003), guest-starred on Dora the Explorer (2004), and joined the cast of ER (2005–2006) as Dr. Victor Clemente. Other projects included the television pilot Edison (2006), The Babysitters (2007), The Kill Point (2007), The Happening (2008), and guest appearances on Sesame Street and The Electric Company.
In 2010, Leguizamo premiered the semi-autobiographical one-man show Klass Klown, later retitled Ghetto Klown. After touring nationally, the production opened on Broadway in 2011 and was later adapted into the documentary Tales From a Ghetto Klown (2012) and an HBO special (2014). Film and television work during this period included Chef (2014), American Ultra (2015), John Wick (2014), Bloodline (2016), and producing Othello: The Remix (2016). In 2015, Abrams ComicArts published a graphic novel adaptation of Ghetto Klown.
In 2017, Leguizamo participated in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s charity single “Almost Like Praying” and debuted the Broadway production Latin History for Morons, which transferred from The Public Theater to Studio 54. He later hosted the 63rd Obie Awards (2018) and appeared in projects including Waco (2018), When They See Us (2019), and the stage musical Kiss My Aztec (2019), which he co-wrote. In 2020, he appeared in The Mandalorian. In 2021, he performed in Waiting for Godot and voiced Bruno Madrigal in Disney’s Encanto. Subsequent film roles included The Menu (2022) and Violent Night (2022).
In 2023, Leguizamo served as a guest host on The Daily Show and hosted the MSNBC series Leguizamo Does America. His adaptation Our Hood received its first reading at the Guthrie Theater that year. In 2024, he hosted the PBS documentary series American Historia: The Untold History of Latinos. In 2025, he appeared in the play The Other Americans at The Public Theater.
