BWW Review: CANCELLED! LYON OPERA BALLET USA TOUR and YAGP NEW YORK FINALS at David H. Koch Theater, Lincoln Center, And Others by Sondra Forsyth
- March 12, 2020 As the pandemic continues to impact the ballet world, I'm keeping BWW Dance updated on cancellations and postponements. This report is about the Lyon Opera Ballet, which is cancelling the USA tour and returning to France, as well as about the cancellation of YAGP New York Finals slated for April 2020. I don't yet have the official release from the Lyon Opera Ballet, but I do have this message from Leoannis Pupo-Guillen. He was a member of my Ballet Ambassadors before joining Lyon. Somehow, the personal message is even more heartrending than an official release.

BWW Review: Pearl Primus: Pioneer of Modern Dance, African Dance, Dance as Protest by Olga El
- March 12, 2020 Pearl Primus (also known as Omowale) was a pioneer of modern dance, dance as protest, and African dance in the United States. She was also cited as an inspiration by acclaimed artists such as Camille Brown, Ntozake Shange, and Jawole Willa Jo Zollar; a teacher of Judith Jamison and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater; a student of Martha Graham; friend of Paul Robeson; and a woman with a degree in medicine. Her medical career was thwarted by racism so she funneled her gifts to the world through the filter of dance instead.

Under the artistic direction of choreographer Paul Lightfoot, the company is presenting three US premieres at NY City Center. Gabriela Carrizo's The Missing Door, Marco Goecke's Walk the Demon, and Sol León and Paul Lightfoot's Shut Eye form a triptych, presenting those parts of the body and mind that resist cultivation.

BWW Review: RICHARD ALSTON DANCE COMPANY - FINAL EDITION at Sadler's Wells by Vikki Jane Vile
- March 09, 2020 Richard Alston is a man who doesn't need reviews any more. With a choreographic career spanning over fifty years (“entirely lacking any strategic plan” by his own admission), there is not much that hasn't been said. Alston is also adamant that this Final Edition is a celebration and not a funeral but there are moments in his generous mixed bill that feel heavily bittersweet. With the company closing after 25 years due to funding restrictions, Alston's work could always be guaranteed to bring quality additions to the dance calendar and its absence will be sorely felt.

BWW Review: ALVIN AILEY AMERICAN DANCE THEATER at Tennessee Performing Arts Center by Melia Kraus-har
- March 03, 2020 It was humbling listening to audience members remark upon the beauty and pure joy of seeing a stage filled with artists of color, responding to a shared sense of knowing, especially Ailey's work, Cry, dedicated in the program to 'all Black women everywhere - especially our mothers.' The ability for audience members to feel seen in a 2,000 plus seat auditorium, by a nearly fifty-year-old work, is the platform Ailey gave his artists.
BWW Review: LA Ballet Presents Brilliant BALANCHINE BLACK & WHITE ~ IN AGON, APOLLO & CONCERTO BAROCCO at The Broad Stage by Valerie-Jean Miller
- March 02, 2020 The Theatre was abuzz with excitement. The long anticipated performance by the Los Angeles Ballet Company of George Balanchines' work was upon us. February 26, 2020, a night of glorious dancing! Preceding the performance, the Artistic Director Colleen Neary gave us a brief history of the makings of these pieces to be presented, and some facts and anecdotes to boot, as she is the one who has staged this entire evening and recreated pieces she was a part of during the creation of them. Talk about your inside story!
Colleen Neary and Thordal Christensen founded the LAB in 2004, the one and only professional classical ballet company in Los Angeles. Of all ballet companies in existence, this company is a valuable resource for not only preserving classic ballets, but nurturing the creativity of the future work to be evolved.
BWW Review: BLUE13 DANCE COMPANY PRESENTS TERPSICHORE IN GHUNGROOS & CONTEMPORARY/BOLLYWOOD WORKS at Wallis Annenberg by Valerie-Jean Miller
- February 28, 2020 BLUE13 Dance Company is a contemporary Indian dance theatre ensemble based in Los Angeles, with a mission to connect diverse audiences through the power of live, aesthetically and culturally daring dance. For over a decade, Blue13 has performed in the U.S. and abroad in it's highly energetic and theatrical modern dance style that is inspired by the classical and cultural art forms of the Indian subcontinent. A first-generation South Asian American, Blue13's Artistic director, Achinta S. McDaniel pulls precision, humor, and deep emotion from her ensemble to create work as rebellious and unconventional as its architect. Storytelling through dance is central to the company, as is a continual exploration of technique with its diverse cast of dancers. The work is moody, rhythmic, and charged, presenting the audience with an intelligent experience of performance that turns the cultural stereotype of Indian dance on its head.
