BWW Review: WHAT THE JEWS BELIEVE at Berkshire Theatre Group Leaves Audiences With Lots to Think About.
by Marc Savitt - October 01, 2019
At it's core, WHAT THE JEWS BELIEVE is a poignant story about the loss of faith and the journey to find it. Moreover, it is about life. The joys, sadness, fears, and many of the overwhelming number of questions that come with it. To his credit, playwright, Mark Harelik, goes to great lengths to pose a plethora of questions most of have, or will have to deal with. It is both notable and admirable that he does so without providing answers. About the choices we make as well as their consequences and impact. Harelik encourages us to think but never tells us how, what, or why we should do so.
BWW Review: SUNSET BOULEVARD: Alice Ripley Puts Her Stamp on Norma Desmond
by Nancy Grossman - September 30, 2019
In the annals of musical theater, Norma Desmond is one of those larger than life characters, like Mame Dennis, Dolly Levi, and Eva Peron, who cries out for an actor with a specific and rare combination of skills to play the role. Tony Award-winner Alice Ripley ascends to playing the faded silent-screen star in the North Shore Music Theatre production of SUNSET BOULEVARD, after originating the role of Betty Schaefer in the 1994 original Broadway cast which starred Glenn Close. In so doing, Ripley joins the pantheon of singular talents who have put their personal stamp on the musical iteration of Norma, stepping out of the shadow of the indelible mark Gloria Swanson made on celluloid in Billy Wilder's 1950 film.

On Wonka's quest to find an heir for his delectable dreamscape, he cooks up a contest for five lucky children around the world to win a golden ticket and tour his chocolate factory. But what these children do not know is that Wonka has also concocted five temptation rooms -- interpreted in WFT@BU's production as gluttony, pride, greed, envy, and anger (sound familiar?) -- to catch anyone who does not have the moral compass to lead his mouth-watering kingdom. Only one child will win a golden ticket and the factory, but it is only through genuine honesty and kindness that he or she will rise.
