Playwrights Horizons History

Playwrights Horizons is a writer's theater dedicated to the support and development of contemporary American playwrights, composers and lyricists, and to the production of their new work. In a city rich with cultural offerings, Playwrights Horizons' 50-year-old mission is unique; we are the only major theater in New York with this specific mission. We have distinguished ourselves by the caliber of our work and our steadfast commitment to the voice of the American writer. It is a mission that is always timely, and it is essential to the future of the American theater.

DAVIS GAINES to headline in the desert at Coachella Valley Repertory on 7/30/26 @ 7pm. DAVIS performed the title role in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera over 2,000 times on Broadway, in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Subsequently, he was chosen by Hal Prince and Lloyd Webber to play the leading role in the World Premiere of Whistle Down the Wind. Other Broadway and National Tour credits include Raoul in The Phantom of the Opera, Cornelius Hackl in Hello, Dolly! (with CAROL CHANNING), Camelot (with RICHARD BURTON) and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (with ALEXIS SMITH). In Los Angeles, Gaines received Best Actor awards for his portrayals of Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha and Hannibal Lecter in SILENCE! The Musical. Film and television work includes Warlock: The Armageddon, Sweeney Todd, Desperate Housewives, Charmed, Chicago Hope, Veronica’s Closet, Bodies of Evidence and Murder, She Wrote. Additionally, Gaines has sung for six U.S. Presidents and with virtually every major symphony orchestra in North America, including the New York Pops at Carnegie Hall and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl. A native of Orlando, he currently resides in Los Angeles and is a frequent singer of our National Anthem for the Los Angeles Lakers, Clippers, Kings and Dodgers.
