Karissa Wheeler's senior year at The University of the South/Sewanee has only just started, but already she's caught up in the whirlwind of a typical – for her, especially – packed and rather crazy schedule, immersed in classes while moving into rehearsals for what may be the most demanding role in which she's ever been cast: Sally Bowles in the iconic Kander and Ebb musical, Cabaret, which is based on John Van Druten's play I Am A Camera, which in turn is inspired Christopher Isherwood's memoir (Goodbye to Berlin) of his years as a struggling young writer in the heady days of Weimar Germany. MOVEIUS Contemporary Ballet (MOVEIUS), pushing the boundaries of ballet to tackle policy issues affecting society, will premiere Rite of Spring, Crash of Fall for its commission at The Kennedy Center. The 35-minute ballet uses Stravinsky's Rite of Spring score and storyline as the backdrop for revisiting the 2008 financial crisis on its 10-year anniversary. The company will also present an excerpt from its acclaimed Glacier: A Climate Change Ballet—which they recently presented at the Global Climate Summit in San Francisco. BWW Review: HAMILTON at Des Moines Civic Center

If you live in the Des Moines area and not under a rock, chances are you know that Hamilton is playing at the Des Moines Civic Center. The critically-acclaimed hip-hop musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda about the 'Ten Dollar Founding Father' is here from June 27-July 15. Des Moines was chosen to host the touring company while the show is still pretty hot, so of course the performances were amazing. With Hamilton still such a ubiquitous part of the current musical theater conversation, I feel like writing about the show is redundant. Yes, Hamilton is fabulous. That goes without saying. It wouldn't be making such a stir if it wasn't. So my review of the actual performance is going to be short. My main focus is going to be on the local hype. (more...)

Basil Twist Joins SYMPHONIE FANTASTIQUE in Select Performances

Beginning tomorrow, July 28, designer, director, master puppeteer, and MacArthur "genius" Basil Twist will perform in his singular creation, Symphonie Fantastique, during all Saturdayevening performances. The 20th-anniversary production, which has received near universal acclaim and is scheduled to close on September 2, will include Twist on July 28, August 4, 11, 18, 25 and September 1 at 8:30pm. Set to Hector Berlioz's revolutionary 1830 score, Symphonie Fantastique, for the first time in New York, features live piano accompaniment by Christopher O'Riley. Hailed as a creative masterpiece when it debuted in 1998, the production, which opened on April 4, is a presentation from HERE's Dream Music Puppetry Program and a centerpiece of HERE's 25th anniversary season. Five of Mexico's top chefs are coming together for The Best of Mexico´s Culinary Traditions Riviera Maya at Grand Velas Riviera Maya from October 10th to 14th. Focusing on traditional Mexican flavors, cooking techniques and ingredients, the culinary event features a seven-course dinner, paired with beer and mezcal. Featured chefs in-clude Reyna Mendoza, an authority on traditional food from Oaxaca; Ricardo Muñoz Zurita, considered an authority on Mexican cuisine having authored an encyclopedia on the topic; David Cetina, renowned for Yucatecan food; Joel Ornelas, known for contemporary presentations of traditional dishes; and Pablo Salas, whose restaurant in To-luca has been named among the Top 50 Restaurants in Latin America. The chefs will team up with chefs Humberto May Tamay and Laura Avalos of Grand Velas' Mayan restaurant, Chaka.
