The 2026 Helen Hayes Award nominations have been announced, recognizing outstanding achievement in Washington-area professional theatre. Arena Stage, Signature Theatre, Shakespeare Theatre Company, Round House Theatre, and dozens of regional companies are represented across performance, direction, design, and production categories. The awards highlight the breadth of theatre work presented throughout the D.C. metropolitan area.

February is going to be an exciting month for Des Moines Performing Arts, as not one, but two Tony Award winners for best musical make their debut on the Civic Center stage. They are opening the month with a week-long run of the 2023 winner for Best Musical, 'Kimberly Akimbo.' If the lead-up activities, like turning their stage into a 90's dance club and a roller skating night, are any indication of how great this show is, then Des Moines Audiences are in for a treat.

'Kimberly Akimbo,” winner of five 2023 Tony Awards including Best Musical and the most critically acclaimed musical of its season, will make its Madison premiere at Overture Center for the Arts.

“Kimberly Akimbo” is a tiny, idiosyncratic musical with a cast of only nine actors that somehow manages to share the full Broadway experience with its opening night audience at Kansas City’s Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.

Original musicals that aren’t based on movies are becoming all too rare these days. Most of the fare tends to be adaptations of popular films, and these musicals can vary in quality. However, every once in a while, something fresh or unique breaks through and becomes a success. It makes me so happy that is what happened with the 2023 Best Musical Tony Winner Kimberly Akimbo.

Miguel Gil stars as Seth in the national tour of KIMBERLY AKIMBO, the Tony Award-winning musical making its Atlanta debut at the Fox Theatre as part of the 2025 – 2026 Regions Bank Broadway in Atlanta season from October 14th – 19th. I caught up with Miguel to talk about his journey from Orlando to Broadway, his experience with the show, and what audiences can expect when Kimberly and her friends and family arrive in Atlanta.

Now playing at the Bass Concert Hall through October 5th, KIMBERLY AKIMBO is a darkly funny and deeply heartfelt musical about finding joy in the midst of life’s complications. At its center is Kimberly Levaco (played by the magnificent Ann Morrison), a bright, witty teenager from suburban New Jersey who looks like a 72-year-old woman due to a rare genetic condition that drastically accelerates aging.

The American Theatre Guild will present Kimberly Akimbo, the 2023 Tony Award winner for Best Musical, at Birmingham’s BJCC Concert Hall November 25–30, 2025. The engagement is part of the 2025–2026 Broadway in Birmingham Series.
