Rosie O'Donnell is a recipient of the Isabelle Stevenson Award, and is a longtime proponent of theatre. Her Broadway credits include The Cat in the Hat in "Seussical!", Rizzzo in "Grease", and Golde in "Fiddler on the Roof". She made her Broadway producing debut with Taboo, the Boy George bio-musical in 2003.
Rosie O’Donnell toured as a stand-up comedian from 1979 to 1984 and gained national exposure as a competitor on Star Search in the early 1980s. She made her television series debut in 1986 on Gimme a Break!. In 1988, she joined VH1 as a veejay and hosted Stand-up Spotlight. In 1992, she starred in the Fox sitcom Stand by Your Man.
O’Donnell made her feature film debut in A League of Their Own (1992). She appeared in Sleepless in Seattle (1993), The Flintstones (1994), Exit to Eden (1994), Beautiful Girls (1996), and Wide Awake (1998). She voiced Terk in Disney’s Tarzan (1999). She was considered for a role on Seinfeld.
From 1996 to 2002, she hosted the syndicated daytime program The Rosie O'Donnell Show through her production company KidRo Productions. After leaving the program in 2002, she guest-starred on Curb Your Enthusiasm.
From 2006 to 2007, O’Donnell served as co-host and moderator of The View. In 2008, The View won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Class Writing for a themed episode she helped create.
In 2008, she starred in and executive produced the Lifetime film America, based on the novel by E.R. Frank. In 2009, she appeared in the stage production Love, Loss, and What I Wore and launched a Sirius XM program, Rosie Radio, which ran until 2011. She made additional guest appearances on Curb Your Enthusiasm in 2009 and 2011.
In 2011, she began working with the Oprah Winfrey Network, hosting The Doc Club with Rosie O’Donnell and later The Rosie Show, which aired from October 2011 to March 2012.
In 2013, she appeared in episodes of Bomb Girls, Jake and the Never Land Pirates, Smash, and Impractical Jokers. From 2014 to 2016, she had a recurring role on The Fosters. She returned as co-host of The View in 2014 and departed in 2015.
In 2015, she appeared in Pitch Perfect 2 and in an episode of Empire. In 2016, she appeared in Mom, served as a regular panelist on Match Game, competed on The $100,000 Pyramid, and portrayed the gym teacher in Hairspray Live!.
From 2017 to 2019, she starred as Tutu in SMILF. In 2019, she was cast in the HBO miniseries I Know This Much Is True. In 2021, she guest-starred on Run the World and The L Word: Generation Q. In 2022, she appeared in the Showtime series American Gigolo, voiced MTA announcements in season two of Russian Doll, and appeared in the Amazon Prime Video series A League of Their Own.
