Writer/Director/Choreographer - Recipient of 2015 Joe A. Callaway Award Outstanding Choreography and 2002 Joseph Jefferson Award Best Choreography. Nominated 2003 Joseph Jefferson Award Best Choreography.
Writer: CORNER OF BITTER AND SWEET. A musical adaptation of the New York Times Best Seller, 'Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet' by Jamie Ford. Book by Lainie Sakakura, Music & Lyrics by Paul Fujimoto. An advocate for Asian American artists, wrote & co-conceived the first all Asian BCEFA Red Bucket Follies Opening celebrating the 60th Anniversary of Flower Drum Song.
Director: NYC Productions at Cherry Lane Theatre, Peter Jay Sharp Theatre, Summer Stage, Neighborhood Playhouse, The Duplex, and Don’t Tell Mama.
New work has always been her focus throughout her career, and has worked on dozens of original musicals including Jimmy Buffett/Herman Wouk's DON'T STOP THE CARNIVAL and Paul Blake's ROMAN HOLIDAY. On Broadway, Ms Sakakura was only in original casts, many times also their prior workshops. The 1999 Tony Award Winning musical, FOSSE took 5 years, 2 workshops, and endless pre-production to bring to Broadway. Ms Sakakura is credited for Dance Reconstruction and Dance Captain. She rarely recreates Fosse choreography today, but was honored in 2005 to stage BIG SPENDER for Cy Coleman's Memorial at the Majestic Theatre featuring Chita Rivera and Ann Reinking.
