Jennifer Connelly

Jennifer Connelly began her career as a model after joining the Ford Modeling Agency at age 10. She appeared in print advertisements and television commercials and was featured on the covers of Seventeen magazine in 1986 and 1988. In December 1986, she recorded two pop songs for the Japanese market, "Monologue of Love" and "Message of Love."

Connelly made her film debut as the young Deborah Gelly in Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in America (1984), which was filmed in 1982 and 1983. She played an aspiring dancer and actress in the film. In 1985, she starred in Dario Argento's horror film Phenomena and the coming-of-age film Seven Minutes in Heaven.

In 1986, Connelly gained wider recognition for her role as Sarah Williams in Jim Henson's fantasy film Labyrinth, opposite David Bowie. She appeared in the Italian film Etoile, released in 1989, and played college student Gabby in Michael Hoffman's Some Girls (1988). In 1990, she portrayed Gloria Harper in Dennis Hopper's crime thriller The Hot Spot.

Connelly starred opposite Frank Whaley in the romantic comedy Career Opportunities (1991) and played Jenny Blake in Disney's adventure film The Rocketeer (1991). In 1992, she appeared alongside Jason Priestley in Roy Orbison's music video for "I Drove All Night," directed by Peter Care.

Her subsequent film credits included Of Love and Shadows (1994), an Argentine-American drama directed by Betty Kaplan, and Higher Learning (1995), directed by John Singleton, in which she played a lesbian college student. In 1996, she appeared as Elie in the independent film Far Harbor and played Allison Pond in the neo-noir crime thriller Mulholland Falls.

In 1997, Connelly portrayed Eleanor Abbott in the drama Inventing the Abbotts, set in the late 1950s. She followed this with a leading role as Emma, a torch singer, in the science fiction film Dark City (1998), directed by Alex Proyas.

In 2000, Connelly portrayed Ruth Kligman in Ed Harris' biographical film Pollock and appeared as Catherine Miller in the Fox drama series The Street. She also starred as Marion Silver in Darren Aronofsky's Requiem for a Dream (2000), based on the novel by Hubert Selby Jr. Her other 2000 film credit was Waking the Dead, in which she played Sarah Williams, an activist killed by a car bomb in Minneapolis.

In 2001, Connelly portrayed Alicia Nash in Ron Howard's biographical drama A Beautiful Mind, opposite Russell Crowe as mathematician John Nash. The film received critical and commercial success, and Connelly won the Academy Award, Golden Globe Award and BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance.

Connelly played Betty Ross, a scientist and Bruce Banner's former girlfriend, in Ang Lee's Hulk (2003). That same year, she starred as Kathy Nicolo in House of Sand and Fog, a drama based on the novel by Andre Dubus III.

After a two-year absence from film, Connelly returned in the psychological horror film Dark Water (2005), portraying Dahlia, a mother who moves with her daughter into an apartment in New York City where paranormal events occur. In 2006, she appeared as Kathy Adamson in the film adaptation of Little Children and portrayed journalist Maddy Bowen in the drama Blood Diamond, opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.

In 2007, Connelly starred as Grace in Reservation Road, a drama directed by Terry George and co-starring Joaquin Phoenix and Mark Ruffalo. She portrayed astrobiologist Helen Benson in the 2008 remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still, opposite Keanu Reeves. In 2009, she appeared in the romantic comedy-drama He's Just Not That Into You, alongside Jennifer Aniston and Ginnifer Goodwin, and portrayed Emma Darwin in the biographical drama Creation, opposite her husband, Paul Bettany. She also voiced the character 7, an adventurous warrior, in the animated film 9 (2009).

In 2010, Connelly starred in Dustin Lance Black's drama Virginia, portraying the title character, a woman involved in a long-term affair with a local sheriff. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2010 and received a limited theatrical release in May 2012. In 2011, she appeared in Ron Howard's comedy The Dilemma, opposite Vince Vaughn, and starred as Gwen in George Ratliff's Salvation Boulevard, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.

In March 2012, Connelly's audiobook recording of Paul Bowles' The Sheltering Sky was released as part of Audible.com's The A-List Collection. That year, she starred as the ex-wife of Greg Kinnear's character in the family drama Stuck in Love, directed by Josh Boone. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2012.

In 2014, Connelly appeared in Winter's Tale, an adaptation of Mark Helprin's 1983 novel, directed by Akiva Goldsman, and Aloft, directed by Claudia Llosa. She also portrayed Naameh in Darren Aronofsky's biblical epic Noah (2014), reuniting with A Beautiful Mind co-star Russell Crowe.

In 2015, Connelly starred in Shelter, the directorial debut of her husband, Paul Bettany. She later starred as Melanie Cavill in the television series Snowpiercer, which ran from 2020 to 2024.

In 2022, Connelly portrayed Penelope "Penny" Benjamin in the action film Top Gun: Maverick, directed by Joseph Kosinski.
