Chase co-founded the underground comedy ensemble Channel One in 1967. He wrote for Mad magazine in 1970 and was a writer for the Smothers Brothers television comeback in 1975. In 1973, he became a writer and cast member of The National Lampoon Radio Hour and appeared in the off-Broadway revue Lemmings. He appeared in the film The Groove Tube (1974).
Chase was an original cast member of Saturday Night Live from 1975 to 1976, serving as the first anchor of the “Weekend Update” segment. He hosted Saturday Night Live multiple times between 1978 and 1997 and appeared in anniversary specials in 1999, 2005, 2013, and 2015.
His early film roles included Tunnel Vision (1976), Foul Play (1978), and Oh! Heavenly Dog (1980). He starred in Caddyshack (1980), Seems Like Old Times (1980), and Modern Problems (1981). He played Clark Griswold in National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983), European Vacation (1985), Christmas Vacation (1989), Vegas Vacation (1997), and Vacation (2015). He starred in Fletch (1985) and Fletch Lives (1989), Spies Like Us (1985), ¡Three Amigos! (1986), Funny Farm (1988), and Caddyshack II (1988).
During the 1990s, Chase appeared in Nothing but Trouble (1991), Memoirs of an Invisible Man (1992), Cops & Robbersons (1994), Man of the House (1995), Snow Day (2000), and Orange County (2002). He hosted The Chevy Chase Show on Fox in 1993.
Chase appeared in supporting and guest roles on television, including Law & Order (2006), Brothers & Sisters (2006), and Chuck (2007–2009). From 2009 to 2013, he starred as Pierce Hawthorne on NBC’s Community. His later film work includes Hot Tub Time Machine (2010), The Last Laugh (2019), and The Christmas Letter (2024).
In 2026, Chase was the subject of the CNN documentary I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not.
