Celebration Revival (1983 Regional (US))

Opened: January 7, 1983
Closing: January 22, 1983

Celebration - 1983 Regional (US) History , Info & More

Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt bring the bold, adventurous theatrical techniques they pioneered in THE FANTASTICKS a step further with CELEBRATION, an allegorical winter's tale.

On a magical New Year's Eve, a young Orphan stumbles into the home of the richest man in the world, whose bizarre entourage includes a beautiful fallen Angel. With the Orphan's help, the jaded Mr. Rich regains his humanity, only to find himself locked in ritualistic battle with the youth for the Angel's love.

The show's small cast is perfect for an intimate community theatre space. Audiences are encouraged to participate in this very original piece of theatre.

Review: THE OUTSIDERS at Dr. Phillips Center For The Performing Arts
by Albert Gutierrez - Dec 17, 2025

One of the most effective things the musical gains by moving from page to screen to stage is permission to reframe the story without betraying it. By leaning harder into the Curtis brothers as the emotional spine, the musical clarifies a distinction that’s always been present in the text but rarely foregrounded this explicitly: Darry, Soda, and Ponyboy are family by blood, bound by obligation and grief; while the Greasers are family by choice, bound by loyalty and survival.
