André Bishop Will Step Down as Artistic Director of Lincoln Center Theater

Bishop has served as Producing Artistic Director of Lincoln Center Theater since July 2013, and first joined the organization as Artistic Director in January 1992.  His departure in June 2025 will coincide with the close of Lincoln Center Theater’s 40th anniversary season.

Every once and a while, when a new season is announced, I find a show in the lineup that I can help but anticipate seeing. For me, that happened when Iowa Stage announced they would be doing 'A Bright New Boise' as part of their 2023 season. It wasn't a show I was familiar with, but it was a plot I was going to be able to relate to. That was due to the show taking place at a Hobby Lobby. I have not worked for Hobby Lobby, but I did work retail for a few years, so going in, I was excited to see another look at the retail working experience. What I got was so much more.

The 2023 Lucille Lortel Awards for Outstanding Achievement Off-Broadway were handed out this evening to recipients in 15 categories, with four honorary awards also bestowed. The Awards were distributed in a ceremony at NYU Skirball hosted by stars of stage and screen: Kevin Cahoon (Tony nominee, 'Shucked'), D'Arcy Carden ('The Thanksgiving Play'), Crystal Lucas-Perry (Tony nominee, 'Ain't No Mo''), Bonnie Milligan (Tony nominee, 'Kimberly Akimbo'), Arian Moayed (Tony nominee, 'A Doll's House'), and Tamara Tunie (The New Group's 'Bernarda's Daughters'). The Lucille Lortel Awards are produced by the Off-Broadway League and Lucille Lortel Theatre, with additional support provided by TDF.


Samuel D. Hunter has written 4 shows including The Whale (Playwright), The Healing (Playwright), Lewiston & Clarkston (Playwright), Greater Clements (Playwright).

Samuel D. Hunter has been nominated for several awards throughout his career. He received nominations for Outstanding Play (Drama Desk Awards) and Outstanding Play (The Lortels) for his work on "A Case for the Existence of God". He was also nominated for the John Gassner Award (Outer Critics Circle Awards) for his play "The Whale". Additionally, he received a nomination for Outstanding Play (Drama Desk Awards) and Playwriting (Obie Awards) for his play "A Bright New Boise".
