Jeanette Oi-Suk Yew is a lighting and video designer based in NYC and her designs have been seen in US cities such as New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Seattle, Minneapolis, Durham, Miami, and internationally at Havana, Prague, Lima and Edinburgh. She aims to create a visual environment that is organically integrated into the landscape and language of the production through heighten engagement.
Recent: Kamala Sankaram's Thumbprint at Prototype 2014, Company XIV’s Nutcracker Rogue, Matthew Paul Olmos’ So Go the Ghosts of Mexico Part One (2013 New York Innovative Theatre Awards Nominee for Lighting Design), Elizabeth Swados and Cecilia Rubino's From the Fire (winner of the 2011 MTM: UK Musical Theatre Awards for Best Musical, Best New Production and Best Music), Conni's Avant Garde Restaurant Returns in: The Mothership Landing (2012 New York Innovative Theatre Awards Nominee for Lighting Design), The Foundry's How Much is Enough, Mozart's Don Giovanni with Isabel Milenski, Aya Ogawa's Oph3lia and Journey to the Ocean (also a collaboration with Adhikaar and produced by The Foundry), The Civilians’ Paris Commune and In the Footprint, Erik Ehn's commemorative cycle Soulographie: Our Genocides, Sheila Callaghan's Roadkill Confidential (premiere production directed by Kip Fagan), Kara Lee Corthron's AliceGraceAnon and Torry Bend's The Paper Hat Game (2012 Indy Week Best Design). Jeanette was the recipient of the NEA/TCG Career Development Program and is a lecturer with Stony Brook University.
Aside from lighting design, Jeanette is also a puppetry artist. Her puppetry production, Are They Edible? was present by La MaMa in November 2013 to sold-out houses. It was described as "bold and inventive" In addition, The Butcher Men was invited to the 2006 Prague Quadrennial and MILK was part of the Labapalooza 2007 (Puppet Lab) at St. Ann’s Warehouse. For her puppetry productions, Jeanette received support the Jim Henson Foundation, the Urban Artist Initiative/NYC Fellowship, Artist Trust’s GAP program, Queens Council on the Arts’ Queens Arts Fund, the Puppeteers of America Rose Endowment Fund, Foundation for Contemporary Arts and Stony Brook University.
