So you did it! You wrote a stage play! Congratulations! Pat yourself on the back! Now what? How do you transform your script from the page to the stage? What is the standard length and time for a stage play? How will I finance it? Where do I find my cast members? Slow Down! Breathe! Don’t Panic! These are all typical questions that first time playwrights/producers ask when we think about mounting a play. I can truly relate! That’s why I am going to be as transparent as I can. Believe me I know how confusing and stressful the process can be.
I am an award-winning playwright/director. My actors (some first-time) have received top-level awards for best actor, best actress, best supporting actor and best supporting actress! No, I don’t have a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Play writing. However, I have produced and directed twenty performances, with thirteen different casts, in seven different cities. I hope the “on-the-job” training qualifies me to write this book.
Needless to say, as the title of this book implies, my journey has not been conventional or traditional. I had to learn some things the hard way. Yet, none of it was in vain; I gained from the good and the bad. Some of the testimonies I have are awesome and defy the norm. However, if I had not stepped “out of the box”, I would not have known it could have been accomplished that way. I would not trade my journey for anything at all. The pitfalls and the successes! The obstacles and the glory days! The scraped knees and the nose bleeds. The tears and the growing pains. Whatever the experience, I have gained some valuable knowledge. Now, I want to share my pearls of wisdom with you in hopes it will help you on your journey, too…even if it teaches you what not to do.
