Review: AMADEUS at ICT Rep At Oliver Place
by Paula Makar - Oct 18, 2025

WAmadeus is a very rich, poetic, highly philosophical play, with lots of music and moving parts. There’s a great deal emotional heavy lifting, so be ready to become immersed in (as well as inspired by) this intense world the cast and crew has created. It’s pretty epic, so don’t miss it, as it only runs one more weekend at ICT Rep!hat did our critic think of AMADEUS at ICT Rep At Oliver Place?
Previews: AMADEUS Is Coming to ICT REP
by Paula Makar - Sep 22, 2025

ICTRep (Wichita Repertory Theater) continues its 2025-26 season with AMADEUS, opening Friday, October 10 at 7:30 p.m. in Oliver Place at 2512 N. Oliver. Peter Shaffer’s 1979 masterpiece is a fictionalized story of the boy-genius Mozart and his musical contemporary, the Court Composer Antonio Salieri. Narrated by Salieri (the self-confessed Patron Saint of Mediocrities) whose life’s work is threatened by his jealousy of Mozart’s brilliance, this drama examines Salieri’s tortured, obsessive battle with the Creator, as the older composer rages against a God who has bestowed the greatest gifts to someone else.

Review: JANE EYRE at Austin Shakespeare
by Sabrina Wallace - Nov 12, 2024

Austin Shakespeare’s production of Jane Eyre offers a strikingly modern and feminist take on the iconic story of a woman’s resilience against the oppressive forces of her time. With music, movement, and a thoughtful focus on Jane’s journey as a woman rather than just her romantic entanglements, this production breathes new life into the well-known narrative.
Review: WAR HORSE IN CONCERT at Century II Concert Hall
by Paula Makar - Nov 3, 2024

As I sat in the audience, waiting for the performance of War Horse In Concert, a Pops presentation for the Wichita Symphony, I overhead several audience members discussing their expectations for what they were about to experience. “Is this a play?”  “It looks like there are narrators!” “Is this different from a regular concert?” Most “In Concert” performances are based on well known musicals, but War Horse In Concert is based on War Horse Suite 2022, a symphonic work derived from the score of the play with the same name. The play is based on the original story written by Michael Morpurgo. War Horse: The Story in Concert premiered at London’s Royal Albert Hall in 2016, with music composed by Adrian Sutton, and the narration was adapted from the play script written in 1982 by Nick Stafford. The performance consisted of a very simple staged version of the piece, with multiple actors playing multiple roles, supplying dialogue at the important points in the story. There was also a main singer and a chorus to help convey the emotions that the spoken word can fail to supply. This allows the orchestra to feature the score so the story to be told by both the music and the word. A concert version is usually a scaled down production, sans sets, props, elaborate costumes, and in the case of War Horse, the puppets used to portray the horses. The audience is asked to use their imaginations, and their mind’s eye, to fill in the remainder of the story.
