Mark Thompson's work for the National Theatre includes The Alchemist, Once in a Lifetime, Henry IV Parts 1 & 2, Duchess of Malfi, Life x 3, The Wind in the Willows, The Madness of George III, Arcadia, Pericles, What the Butler Saw and The Day I Stood Still. Recent work elsewhere includes And Then There Were None (Gielgud); Bombay Dreams (London and Broadway); The Lady in The Van (Queen's), Follies (New York (set only); Dr Dolittle & Blast! (Apollo Hammersmith).For the RSC: Hamlet, Measure for Measure, The Wizard of Oz, Much Ado About Nothing, The Comedy of Errors and The Unexpected Man; at the Royal Court: Piano/Forte, The Woman Before, Wild East, Mouth to Mouth, Six Degrees of Separation, Hysteria, The Kitchen, and Never Land; for the Donmar: Twelfth Night, Uncle Vanya (costumes only), The Blue Room, Insignificance, Company (also Albery), and The Front Page; for the Almeida: Volpone, Betrayal, Party Time and Butterfly Kiss.

Na vakkundig beraad hebben zij hun nominaties bekend gemaakt. Disney's Aladdin en Come From Away zijn beiden met 12 nominaties het meest vertegenwoordigd direct gevolgd door Rocky Horror Show met 11 nominaties. Ook dit jaar kan het publiek bepalen welke musical van het afgelopen seizoen, volgens hen, de beste is via de Leukstetickets.nl Publieksprijs voor Beste Musical. Publiek kan sinds begin maart hun stem uitbrengen op leukstetickets.nl. De prijsuitreiking vindt plaats op 28 april 2022 in RTM Stage, de grote theaterzaal van Rotterdam Ahoy en wordt om 20.35 uur live uitgezonden door AVROTROS op NPO1.
