Joe Mantegna Headshot

BIO

Joe Mantegna made his stage debut in the Chicago production of Hair (1969) and made his Broadway debut in Working (1978). He co-wrote the award-winning play Bleacher Bums, which premiered at Chicago's Organic Theater Company, where he was also a member of the original cast. He won the Tony Award for his performance as Richard Roma in David Mamet's Glengarry Glen Ross and went on to collaborate frequently with Mamet throughout his career.


Mantegna made his feature film debut in Medusa Challenger (1977). He appeared in Compromising Positions (1985), an episode of The Twilight Zone (1985), The Money Pit (1986), Weeds (1987), and Suspect (1987). He starred in David Mamet's House of Games (1987), Things Change (1988), and Homicide (1991). Other notable film credits include The Godfather Part III (1990), Airheads (1994), and Baby's Day Out (1994).

On television, Mantegna earned an Emmy Award nomination for portraying Dean Martin in the HBO film The Rat Pack (1998). He starred as Supreme Court Justice Joseph Novelli in the CBS drama First Monday (2002) and has voiced mob boss Fat Tony on The Simpsons in a recurring role.

In 2004, Mantegna received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Los Angeles Italian Film Festival. Since 2006, he has co-narrated the National Memorial Day Concert in Washington, D.C., alongside Gary Sinise.

In 2007, Mantegna joined the CBS crime drama Criminal Minds, replacing Mandy Patinkin as David Rossi. Beginning with the show's ninth season, he also directed several episodes. In 2016, he participated in a reading of Gabriele Tinti's poetry at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
