Review: MAGIC MOMENT OF RECORDING HISTORY
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold - Aug 29, 2026
The 2010 jukebox musical MILLION DOLLAR, QUARTET by Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux celebrates an impromptu moment in recording history when the legends Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis found themselves together in the studio of Sun Records. The jam session that followed was captured on an historic 1956 recording, and the story of that chance meeting forms the basis of the musical.
Maine State Music Theatre co-produces with the Public Theatre in whose intimate space the explosive energy of this rock ‘n’ roll quartet is all-embracing and irresistible. Escott and Mutrux’s book is one of the better constructed among jukebox musicals in that it creates some true drama and back story for each of the artists portrayed. The score is a veritable soundtrack of early hillbilly and rock ‘n’ roll music and some of the greatest hits of each of these artists. The show requires virtually all of the actors to be musicians who play live on stage. The company does not disappoint, and under the music and stage direction of Scott Moreau, they recreate a sense of the spontaneity, electricity, and sheer dynamism of musical moment. What did our critic think of MAGIC MOMENT OF RECORDING HISTORY at MSMT & Public Theatre?

Review: MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET at STAGES St. Louis is Rollicking Rock 'n Roll Fun
by James Lindhorst - Sep 14, 2023
STAGES St. Louis has resurrected the spirits of Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis in a dazzling, high energy and flashy production of MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET. This show is musical theatre perfection from top to bottom. The performances are spectacular. The musicianship is masterful. The vocals are sensational. The technical theatre work is otherworldly. The entire cast, crew, and production design team have assembled a production that is in a class by itself. STAGES St. Louis has the Kirkwood Performing Arts Center (KPAC) rockin’!
Review: MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET at New Theatre & Restaurant
by Alan Portner - May 1, 2023
MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET has returned to New Theatre & Restaurant after a five-year absence. For fans of early 1950s Rock N Roll music, finding a great production of the QUARTET is equivalent to stumbling upon the Holy Grail while flashing on their teenage years. MDQ is entertaining.
