Emily Skeggs is known for her work on stage and screen. She received a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her performance as Medium Alison in Fun Home, a role she originated on Broadway in 2015.
Raised in New York City, Skeggs attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School before earning a degree in theatre with a minor in writing from Emerson College. Her early training included classical and musical roles in productions such as City of Angels, Macbeth, Much Ado About Nothing, and Robin Hood, reflecting a foundation in both dramatic and musical performance.
Skeggs began her professional career in New York theater, appearing Off-Broadway in productions including Take Me Along at Irish Repertory Theatre and Ripcords at the New York International Fringe Festival. She continued working with Irish Rep in the musical Transport and appeared in Signature Theatre Company’s And I and Silence. Her regional work includes a performance as Rebecca in Our Town at the Huntington Theatre Company.
Her breakthrough came with Fun Home, where she initially served as an understudy Off-Broadway before stepping into the role of Medium Alison and later reprising it for the Broadway production. Her performance earned both a Tony Award nomination and a Theatre World Award. She later appeared on television as a young Roma Guy in the ABC miniseries When We Rise, which chronicled the history of the LGBTQ civil rights movement in the United States.
In film, Skeggs starred opposite Kyle Gallner in the comedy Dinner in America, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. The film gained renewed attention and a cult following several years later, with Skeggs receiving particular praise for her performance and for her vocal work on the original song “Watermelon.”
