Review: SWEENEY TODD is a Bloody Good Time at Palm Canyon Theatreby Charlie Thomas - Palm Springs
(03/13/2024) - What is it about a good horror story that draws audiences by the cart load? Is it the adrenaline surge of danger around every corner, even as the viewer remains safely out of danger? Or is it the exploration of the dark side of man’s psyche, feeding a vicarious blood lust in the deep recesses of our primordial hind brains? Or, is it a bit of schadenfreude, particularly if the victim is “deserving”? All of things await the anxious theatregoer in Palm Canyon’s Theatre’s latest venture, Steven’s Sondheim’s macabre masterpiece “Sweeney Todd”.

Interview: Kyle McArthur of WICKED THE MUSICAL at Bass Concert Hallby Joni Lorraine - Austin
(03/11/2024) - WICKED comes to town this week! And even though it’s running for nearly two weeks, don’t expect to get seats for much longer, because this show is (yes, I’m going to say it, so go ahead and sing it yourself) POPular. WICKED is in fact, pushing up against THE LION KING as the highest grossing musical of all time. This stands to reason, as it is based on what is arguably the most influential film of all time, The Wizard of Oz. WICKED actually has its roots in lesser known novels also called Wicked, by author Gregory McGuire. And now, after fourteen years of various delays, the film version will finally be released later this year.
Review: NAUGHTY MARIETTA at Kirkwood Performing Arts Centerby Steve Callahan - Opera
(03/11/2024) - Winter Opera continues it’s seventeenth season with another iconic operetta—Victor Herbert’s Naughty Marietta. This lovely old show premiered in 1910. Review: DREAMING OF LEAR at Upstream Theaterby Steve Callahan - St. Louis
(03/11/2024) - DREAMING OF LEAR is a brilliant, memorable piece of leading-edge experimental theater. Its director, Lucy Cashion, has, I think, the most refreshing brain in the St. Louis theater world. It’s been a decade since she appeared on my horizon, and in that time she’s led a number of exciting productions. She joined the SLU faculty and has recently become Director of the school’s Theatre & Dance Program—a position which is virtually (and was perhaps literally) “made for her”.

Review: BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL at Desert Theatreworksby Charlie Thomas - Palm Springs
(03/11/2024) - For folks of “a certain age” (which I am not telling if I do or do not fall into that category), prolific songwriter and performing artist Carole King provided what could be the official soundtrack to their adolescence. For those who have not quite crossed that age threshold, you would be surprised how well her music has endured and firmly taken its place in the American songbook, speaking to multiple generations with songs of hope, love and all that comes after.
