Now Playing Onstage in Pittsburgh - Week of 4/27/2014 ORPHÉE
Benedum Center
4/26-5/4/2014
Based on Jean Cocteau's 1950 retelling of the Orpheus myth, Orphee is a parable on the life of an artist in which the poets Orphee and Cegeste, Eurydice, and a mysterious Princess interact within the worlds of the living and the dead. Love eventually triumphs, but The Princess has violated the laws of life and death, and is banished into oblivion. Philip Glass's Orphee finds the composer "at his most inventive" (Washington Times), bringing his signature ostinato figures to the work, but creating a "lyrical and even seductive" whole, a "fast-moving opera that grabs hold from the first jazzy flourishes"(Baltimore Sun). The Albany Times-Union called the production "a stunner." Matthew Worth (The Barber of Seville, 2010) leads the cast as Orphee, alongside former Resident Artist Caroline Worra as Eurydice. Heather Buck makes her Pittsburgh Opera debut as La Princesse in this chic production from Glimmerglass Opera, complete with a portrait that is an homage to Chuck Close. Sam Helfrich (Eugene Onegin , 2009) returns as stage director. Music Director Antony Walker conducts.

Now Playing Onstage in Pittsburgh - Week of 4/27/2014 JOE BONAMASSA
Benedum Center
5/6-5/6/2014
Joe Bonamassa is the guitarist's guitarist. A master of the blues, Bonamassa easily ranks alongside the more well known Clapton or Jeff Beck. Such was his prodigious talent that he supported B.B. King at the tender of age of twelve in 1989, and was christened by King as "one of a kind." Since them, he's played with anyone who is anyone and released a formidable catalogue of studio albums. Bonamassa is one of those performers who seems to live on the road and 2014 finds him touring extensively across America and Europe. An opportunity to witness a master at the very top of his game is one not to be missed.

Pittsburgh Public Theater
4/17-5/18/2014
Candida was a smash when it premiered in 1903 and is still a triumph of sophistication. In this sparkling comedy, Candida is in the middle of a romantic tug of war between husband John Morell, the practical parson, and Eugene Marchbanks, the passionate poet. They are surrounded by her uproarious provincial father and Morell's eccentric staff, but it is love and marriage that are the targets of Shaw's celebrated wit. Gretchen Egolf, the radiant Rosalind of As You Like It will return to The Public to dazzle audiences in the role of Candida.
