Annenberg Center Live kicks off its fall season with the U.S. tour of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre Company's King Lear. Direct from London, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre presents a faithful restaging of King Lear that's filled with tempestuous poetry, touches of humor and moments of heart-rending simplicity. This production of what is considered Shakespeare's greatest tragedy features stage and screen actor Joseph Marcell, known for his role as Geoffrey in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The show runs September 24-27 at the Annenberg Center at 3680 Walnut Street. Tickets cost $20-$65 and are available online at Annenbergcenter.org, at the Box Office, or by phone at 215.898.3900. Theatre School at DePaul University's THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH Opens 10/7

The Theatre School at DePaul University will present The Phantom Tollbooth, by Susan Nanus, based on the book by Norton Juster, and directed by special guest David Catlin (founding ensemble member, Lookingglass Theatre Company) as the first production of the 2014-2015 Chicago Playworks for Families and Young Audiences season. This production opens Tuesday, October 7, and runs through Saturday, November 15, 2014, at DePaul's historic Merle Reskin Theatre. Performances are Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 AM, and Saturdays at 2 PM. Friday performances (10 AM) will be held on October 17 and November 7. A special Sunday performance (2 PM) will be held on October 26. There will be no Saturday performance on October 25. (more...)

On September 20, West Coast musical theatre composer Bill Haller is set to roll out his third L.A.-based live musical "Rock Van Winkle" at Oh My Ribs Theatre at the Complex in Hollywood. "Rock Van Winkle" is the story of a Woodstock era musician who, in August 2001, crawls out of a clothes dryer in an abandoned Laurel Canyon bungalow after a 30-year acid trip and encounters three generations of pop music royalty. Forward Flux Productions will present the North West Regional premiere reading of Lia Romeo's dangerously dark comedy Green Whales at the next Flux Salon gathering in Seattle. In addition to the reading, visual art will be on display from Seattle artist Sydney M. Pertl and there will be a musical performance by beat-box artist Zeke Keeble. The Flux Salon presents new works by fresh voices in intimate spaces throughout the city, and this marks the first in a series of three Salons featuring plays by female playwrights. Griffin Theatre Company will launch its 2014-15 season with a new, intimate version of the Tony Award-winning Best Musical TITANIC, with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston (Nine, Phantom), book by Peter Stone (Woman of the Year, 1776), new orchestrations by Ian Weinberger, directed by Scott Weinstein (Griffin Theatre's Spelling Bee, Chicago Shakespeare Theater's Seussical) and music direction by Elizabeth Doran (Timeline's Juno). Kansas City Repertory Theatre continues its 50th anniversary celebration with the Kansas City premiere of Ayad Akhtar's The Who & The What, directed by Kansas City Repertory Theatre's Artistic Director Eric Rosen. From the 2013 Pulitzer Prize-winning writer of Disgraced, Ayad Akhtar's play, The Who & The What takes a passionate and searing look at a family divided by faith, bonded by love and searching for truth in contemporary America. A brilliant young Pakistani writer is focused on finishing a controversial novel that bridges the gulf between her modern life and her traditional heritage. But when her conservative father and sister discover her manuscript, they are all forced to confront the beliefs that define then.
