Now Playing Onstage in Kansas City - Week of 2/02/2014 A MODERN NIGHT AT THE FOLLY
Folly Theater
2/8-2/8/2014
City in Motion Dance Theater is proud to present the 11th annual performance of "A Modern Night at the Folly" a choreographers' showcase for Kansas City's local and regional contemporary dance. This is an adjudicated event for professional choreographers working in our community. City in Motion provides the venue and production support at the venerable Folly Theater in downtown Kansas City. The showcase offers main stage exposure of the choreographer's work to an audience, and the audience's exposure to the diverse artistry of contemporary dance. Choreographers provide for their own dancers and all of the development and rehearsal time needed to create a finished piece of work. City in Motion Dance Theater, Inc. is a professional dance company, a presenter of dance and a school of dance. This concert builds upon City in Motion's mission to foster the development of high-quality contemporary dance programming and expand the dance audience in the greater Kansas City Metropolitan area. Since 1985, City in Motion has provided opportunities to developing as well as experienced choreographers to present their work, first through "The Choreographer's Showcase" and then the "New Dance Series". A Modern Night at the Folly is a continuation of that tradition.

Now Playing Onstage in Kansas City - Week of 2/02/2014 SCHEHERAZADE! AND, LEON FLEISHER PLAYS RAVEL
Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts
2/7-2/9/2014
In another rich and diverse program, legendary pianist Leon Fleisher, representing the gold standard of musicianship, imparts his artistry on the stage of Helzberg Hall. From the horror of war came a work of beauty and grace - Ravel's Concerto for the Left Hand, composed for Austrian pianist Paul Wittgenstein who lost his right arm in World War I. The program opens with composer/conductor Leonard Bernstein's only work as a film composer - an aggressive and jazzy portrayal of crime, violence and corruption. Capping off this colorful program is Rimsky-Korsakov's vibrant score based on the tale of Scheherazade and the Thousand and One Nights. In some of the most evocative music ever written, the composer depicts the sea, a vibrant festival in Baghdad and a ship wrecked by storm. Ovation & Masterworks Series

Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts

The Bahia Orchestra Project is a pioneer initiative in Brazil modeled on the Venezuelan "El Sistema." It was founded in 2007 by the Brazilian pianist and conductor Ricardo Castro, who remains its artistic and general director. Supported by the government of Bahia, this orchestra is part of the long-term educational program NEOJIBA (Nucleos Estaduais de Orquestras Juvenis e Infantis da Bahia). Over the last couple of years, it has been gaining acclaim in Europe for its engaging performances that consistently bring sold-out audiences in London, Berlin, and Geneva to their feet. "This orchestra is at the very tip of the powerful movement to inspire young kids through music and give them a future," reported Radio Berlin Brandenburg. Jean-Yves Thibaudet, "one of the best pianists of our time" (New York Sun), has the rare ability to combine poetic musical sensibilities with dazzling technical prowess. His talent at coaxing subtle and surprising colors and textures from even old favorites has led the New York Times to exclaim "…every note he fashions is a pearl…the joy, brilliance and musicality of his performance could not be missed."
