'Despicable 2' Outpacing 'Monsters' in Advance Ticket Sales on Fandango
According to Fandango, the nation's moviegoers are mad about Minions, propelling "Despicable Me 2" to the top of the Fanticipation movie buzz chart as the number one movie fans want to see this weekend -- scoring an impressive 95 out of 100 points, and beating out the Johnny Depp-Armie Hammer action-adventure, "The Lone Ranger," which scored 86. "Despicable" is also outpacing "Monsters University" in advance ticket sales, currently selling 15% more advance tickets at the same point in that film's sales cycle.
Fandango's Fanticipation measures fan sentiment around the weekend box office line-up, and provides a solid indicator for which movies fans are planning to see in theaters. The numerical scores are calculated based on a proprietary analysis of Fandango's advance ticket sales, website and mobile traffic, and social media engagement.
Based on a survey of more than 1,000 ticket-buyers of "Despicable Me 2" on Fandango:
· 77% will be seeing the film over 4th of July Week as part of a family activity;
· More than half (55%) said the scene-stealing Minions are their favorite "Despicable Me" characters, even more popular than Gru, voiced by Steve Carell;
· 91% already claimed they couldn't wait to see the film's spinoff, "Minions," in theaters next year.
To help moviegoers decide which movie to see during the 4th of July weekend, Chief Correspondent Dave Karger breaks down the new releases, and interviews the "Despicable Me 2" cast on this week's episode of Fandango's "Weekend Ticket" video series.
