National Geographic Live Arizona Speaker Series, sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, brings Paleontologist, Paul Sereno to Mesa Arts Center Wednesday, January 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Ikeda Theater. Perhaps the world's best-known paleontologist, Paul Sereno has discovered more than two dozen new dinosaur species on five continents. Tickets are available through the Mesa Arts Center Box Office at mesaartscenter.com or by calling 480-644-6500.

Paul Sereno has led expeditions to the Andes, central Asia, and the Sahara, and some of his discoveries support the once-radical idea of an evolutionary link between dinosaurs and birds. In 2009, with Chinese colleagues, he published findings of a herd of birdlike dinosaurs that he helped discover in the Gobi desert, where the legendary Roy Chapman Andrews first discovered a treasure trove of dinosaurs in the 1920s.

Paul Sereno's work has been featured in numerous National Geographic magazine articles and teleVision Productions, including two films that premiered on the National Geographic Channel in fall 2009. One of the films focused on crocodiles and the other featured bizarre dinosaurs, including a dwarf dinosaur with a mushroom-shaped head.

National Geographic Live and Mesa Arts Center will also present companion events for area students and educators. Each of the speakers featured in the evening series present a matinee performance specifically geared to students (primarily middle school students). Lessons plans and other related materials are available in preparation for the events. Schools may register on a first-come, first-served basis for these matinees at www.nglive.org/arizona.
