Tempe, AZ - Stray Cat Theatre is proud to announce its upcoming production of ANGELS IN AMERICA, Tony Kushner’s groundbreaking, Pulitzer Prize-winning play that remains one of the most powerful and resonant works in the American theatrical canon.
A sweeping, deeply human epic, ANGELS IN AMERICA explores love, identity, politics, and spirituality in the midst of the AIDS crisis in 1980s America. With equal parts raw emotion, biting humor, and surreal theatricality, Kushner’s masterwork confronts the complexities of community, illness, and change with urgency and compassion.
“ANGELS IN AMERICA is a monumental piece of theatre,” says Artistic Director Ron May. “It challenges audiences while also offering moments of incredible beauty, hope, and connection. It feels especially vital to revisit this story now, as we continue to navigate questions of justice, empathy, and what it means to care for one another. It also strangely - almost prophetically - provides a look at the seeds to an answer to that ever present question lately of “HOW, as a nation, did we get HERE?”
Stray Cat Theatre’s production promises a bold and intimate staging, staying true to our reputation for fearless, thought-provoking work.
ANGELS IN AMERICA PARTS I AND II
by Tony Kushner
directed by Ron May
May 1 - 16, 2026
Arguably the most ambitious American play of our time: an epic that travels from earth to heaven; focuses on politics, sex and religion; transports us to Washington, the Kremlin, the South Bronx, Salt Lake City and Antarctica; switches between realism and fantasy, from the tragedy of AIDS to the camp comedy of drag queens to the death or at least the absconding of God…and we’re finally taking our swing at it. We’re doubly thrilled to announce our Associate Head Kitty Louis Farber will be taking on the role of Roy Cohn.

“A vast miraculous play … provocative, witty and deeply upsetting … a searching and radical rethinking of American political drama … PERESTROIKA is not only a stunning resolution of the rending human drama of MILLENIUM APPROACHES, but also a true millennial work of art, uplifting, hugely comic and pantheistically religious in a very American style.” - New York Times
