Broadway In Chicago announced their new social media program, Around Broadway In 80 Days. In the wake of the cancellation of The Jimmy Awards® (the national program) and the Illinois High School Musical Theatre Awards (the regional program), the initiative will celebrate and provide a virtual stage for all the participants that were unable to perform in the 2020 IHSMTA event.

Yesterday, BroadwayWorld was saddened to report the loss of composer and lyricist Jerry Herman, who passed away on December 26, 2019 at age 88. To commemorate his life and work, the Committee of Theatre Owners will dim the lights of Broadway theatres in New York for one minute on Tuesday, January 7th at exactly 6:45pm.

Film submissions are now open for the American Black Film Festival (ABFF)'s 23rd Annual HBO Short Film Competition. The five filmmakers selected as finalists will receive a trip to the festival in Miami Beach, Florida (including airfare and hotel accommodations), which runs from June 17-21, 2020. The winning prize for the ABFF's HBO Short Film Award is $10,000 and each finalist will receive $5,000. In addition, all five films will be made available to stream on HBO.

The company extended this singular experience to writers throughout California, soliciting short stories from all points of view, from California's rich diversity of writers, published or unpublished.The Festival received 160 entries, from writers of all ages, professionals, amateurs, and students, all from California.

Healdsburg's Raven Players, located in the heart of the Northern California wine country, have announced they are accepting submissions for their inaugural Short Play Festival to run February 28 - March 1, 2020 at the Raven Performing Arts Theater in Healdsburg. The competitive festival is themed 'Love Bites' and will feature plays of 10 to 20 minutes in duration. Playwrights from around the world are invited to submit original works that generally focus on the joy, heartbreak, humor and/or tragedy of any type of love.

Red Bull Theater today announced the cast for their ninth annual festival of 10-minute plays of heightened language and classic themes, featuring two brand new commissions from Kia Corthron and Marcus Gardley, alongside six brand new plays that have been chosen from hundreds of submissions from playwrights across the country: Kate Abbruzzese, Terry Glaser, Eric Pfeffinger, Bridgette Dutta Portman, David Lerner Schwartz, Sofya Levitsky Weitz, and Matthew Wells.

New York playwright Allston James's drama Reverie 2.0 is a finalist in the 2019 British Theatre Challenge in London. Five winners will be produced for a week-long run, Oct. 1-5 and filmed by Mini-Mammoth Films. This year's competition drew entries from playwrights in 14 countries. London-based Sky Blue Theatre Company, John Mitton, Artistic Director, is producer of the British Theatre Challenge, now in its 8th year.

The last time a well-known actor not especially noted for singing graced a major New York stage with a one-person autobiographical musical that focused on personal tragedy, it was Suzanne Somer's unmissably jaw-dropping narcissistic spectacle, THE BLONDE IN THE THUNDERBIRD. But fear not, playgoers, for while David Cale does provide quite a few original ditties to augment his childhood memoir, WE'RE ONLY ALIVE FOR A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME, his not-quite-Sinatra-level vocals are way more suited for this captivating presentation than a more elegant songbird's trill.
