There was a time early in this century when conductor Lorin Maazel led Massenet’s opera THAIS, surprising audiences by picking up a violin during Act II to play the work’s famous “Meditation” himself—usually the realm of the concertmaster. At the NY Philharmonic’s performance of Poulenc’s monodrama, LA VOIX HUMAINE, on Thursday, soprano/conductor Barbara Hannigan did him one better.

Espelho Mágico, a new musical celebrating six decades of Brazilian television, will premiere on March 20 at the BTG Pactual Hall in São Paulo. Inspired by the legacy of Rede Globo, Brazil’s largest TV network, the production revisits iconic characters, programs, and songs that shaped the country’s cultural landscape. The story follows a writer tasked with creating a musical about Globo’s history who is guided by the spirit of legendary telenovela author Janete Clair. Blending humor, nostalgia, and nearly forty musical numbers, Espelho Mágico offers a vibrant theatrical tribute to the programs and personalities that defined generations of Brazilian viewers.

The 8th Digital Press Highlight Award (Prêmio Destaque Imprensa Digital – DID), the only award in Brazil dedicated exclusively to musical theatre, will celebrate the best of São Paulo’s 2024–2025 season on December 9 at the Teatro Liberdade. A panel of 12 journalists and digital media critics will select winners across 17 categories, while audiences can vote online for the Audience Choice Award. More than just a competition, the DID has become a celebration of Brazil’s vibrant musical theatre scene — closing the year with brilliance, humor, and emotion, and reaffirming the stage as a place of passion, creativity, and community.

Theatro São Pedro's opera season brings the comic opera 'Falstaff' by renowned Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi to the public, with musical direction by Ira Levin and staging by Caetano Vilela.
