The Glenn Miller Orchestra Returns to Portland

The Glenn Miller Orchestra from New York will perform one night only in Portland as they tour the world, bringing timeless classics like In the Mood, Moonlight Serenade, Chattanooga Choo Choo, Pennsylvania 6-5000, String of Pearls and Tuxedo Junction back to the stage. Even 80 years after founding his famous orchestra, Glenn Miller's music is alive and well.

The Portland-grown Fertile Ground City-Wide Festival of New Works kicks off its 11th annual festival next month beginning on Thursday, January 30 and continuing through Sunday, February 9.  Fertile Ground is set in a town boasting prolific playwrights, abundant actors, innovative dancers, talented designers and adventuresome producers. Over the past ten festivals, Fertile Ground has welcomed more than 1,100 a?oeacts of creationa?? from Portland's artistic communities that thrive on stages, nooks and crannies all over the city for 11 days.

THE GREAT TENNESSEE MONKEY TRIAL Comes to Portland Playhouse

Street Scenes presents a special staging at Portland Playhouse of The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial by Peter Goodchild. This special event will be a staged reading of the actual words of Darrow, Brian, Scopes, Malone, Hays, et ala?"taken directly from the trial transcript of what has become known as the Scopes Monkey Trial. Our terrific cast will include Dave Bodin as Clarence Darrow, Carl Coughlin as William Jennings Brian, Jim Butterfield as Judge Raulston, Michael Streeter as Arthur Hays, Blaine Vincent as John T. Scopes, Keith Cable as the Narrator,a?"along with Sam Hawkins and John Armour as the townspeople of Dayton, Tennessee in 1925. Fact: The Scopes Trial was the first American trial to be broadcast nationally.

Set in 1864 in the fictional town of Brannock, Montana, evil lurks in the shadows of an otherwise bustling gold town as old friendships break down, and new mysteries unfold. Live projections, moving sets, and a working saloon surround the audience that moves through the play in promenade fashion. Performances continue on December 14, 15,  and 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, and 22 at 7:30 PM. There will also be matinee performances at 2:00 PM on Sunday Dec. 15, Saturday Dec. 21 and Sunday Dec. 22. After the opening night performance on Dec. 13, there will be a hot cocoa and cookie reception.
