Third Annual El Barrio's Shakespeare Festival Begins This Week

The Shakespeare Forum, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating empowered communities through education and performance, announces the 2019 El Barrio's Shakespeare Festival. The three-week festival will present professional and student performances and seeks to help foster the actors and audiences of tomorrow.

The Secret Theatre (Richard Mazda, Artistic Director) and Ript Theater Company (Nathan Winkelstein, Artistic Director) today announced that their 2018-'19 season will kick off with a new adaptation of William Shakespeare's Hamlet, which will run September 13th - 30th (7:30 PM evenings, 2:00 PM matinees) at The Secret Theatre (44-02 23rd Street, Long Island City, NY 11101). Red Bull Associate Producer and Ript Theater Company Founder Nathan Winkelstein (Government Inspector), leads an exceptional cast that features Lindsay Alexandra-Carter (Rosalind-The Folger), Ade Otukoya (Shades of Blue), and St Louis Circle Award two time nominee Chauncy Thomas (Labute New Theater Festival). Hamlet is directed by Nathan Winkelstein with sound design by Alan Waters, lighting design by Paul Kennedy and costumes by Sarah Marie Dixey.

Alabama Story, which recently opened at the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater, begins and ends with the simple, child-like need for the characters to both tell and beckon the audience to prepare for a story: a story that tells of the South but deals with much that is not southern in nature, a story that was not meant to turn into anything other than something with a happy ending. Alabama Story tells a story of people who have stories, make up stories, and never saw the proper end to their stories: all taking place in the turbulent years leading up to the 1960's.

"A Midsummer Night's Dream," opening March 17 and running through April 3, is co-produced with Peregrine Theater Ensemble and directed by Jeffry George and Christopher Ostrom. STC Artistic Director Michael Kahn will direct both parts of this sweeping epic - one of Shakespeare's culminating achievements in the history play genre - over multiple nights. As Kahn says, describing Parts 1 and 2 as his favorite Shakespearean drama: 'It brings to the stage every issue we as human beings experience.' The two productions will run in the Company's Sidney Harman Hall (610 F Street NW) from today, March 25 - June 8, 2014.
