Live from the casts of Operation Mincemeat in London (West End), New York (Broadway), Chicago (North American leg of the world tour) and Norwich (UK leg of the world tour), during curtain call of each of their respective shows, it was announced today that the Tony and Olivier Award-winning musical Operation Mincemeat, is officially heading to Australia as the next leg of its World Tour.

It’s extremely original, and it’s the kind of show that gives me hope for the future of new one-of-a-kind musicals like it. Written by David Cummings, Felix Hagan, Natasha Hodgson, and Zoë Roberts, Operation Mincemeat tells the true story of the MI5 mission to turn the tide of World War II. Members of the British intelligence agency devised a plan to have a corpse wash up on the tides of Spain, outfitted with fictitious documents detailing Britain’s plan to invade Sardinia — diverting Nazi troops away from Sicily.

The plot of Operation Mincemeat makes it a truly bizarre choice for a theatrical musical. During World War II, Britain needed a way to lure the Nazi troops away from Sardinia, which was militarily significant, to the coast of Spain, which wasn’t. The plan they came up with was preposterous, somewhat gruesome and ultimately successful. The story isn’t wholly unknown–there was a film version in 2021 based on a 2010 book (among other works), but the stage musical version is something rather amazing that this reviewer already wants to see again.
