BIO
George Forbes is the Executive Director of the Lucille Lortel Foundation and the Lucille Lortel Theatre. George has a BFA from Boston University with a focus on Theatre Management and an MBA from
NYU. He began working at the Lortel Theatre in 1989. While working for Lucille Lortel, he also managed Off-Broadway’s Promenade and Variety Arts Theatres until 2000.
Under his direction, the Lucille Lortel Theatre has launched numerous artistic and educational programs including the Emmy Award-winning "Dangerous Acts," NYC High School Playwriting Fellowship, The Alcove (Caridad Svich, Artistic Director), Musical Theatre Lab (Michael Heitzman, Artistic Director), and many
others.
Additionally, because of his strong commitment to service to the field, the Lortel provides management support to LAByrinth Theater, Hi-Arts, Hook Arts Media, the Off-Broadway League and Rattlestick Theater in NYC as well as the Weston Playhouse and Dorset Theatre Festival in Vermont and Peterborough Players in New Hampshire. George served on the Off-Broadway League board from 1991 to 2022, was Treasurer (1993 to 2007) and President (2007 to 2014). George has been actively involved in producing the Lucille Lortel Awards
since 1989 and served as a member of the Awards Nominating committee for nine years.
George is a trustee of the Equity League Pension, Health, and 401K Funds, the League ATPAM Pension Fund and has completed the IFEBP Trustee Master Program, George was a member of NYC & Company’s Culture Committee, which worked to promote NFP cultural institutions across New York City, and helped create the
Off-Broadway Week program.
