George Forbes Biography
George Forbes is the Executive Director of the Lucille Lortel Foundation and the Lucille Lortel Theatre Foundation. George has a BFA from Boston University with a focus on Theatre Management and an MBA from NYU. He began working at the Lortel Theatre in 1989. While working for Lucille Lortel, he also managed Off-Broadway’s Promenade and Variety Arts Theatres until 2000 when he was named VP and ED of the Lucille Lortel Foundation and Lucille Lortel Theatre Foundation. Under his direction, the Lortel Theatre Foundation currently manages the Lucille Lortel Theatre as well as providing management services to the Cherry Lane Theatre, En Garde Arts, Hook Arts Media, Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, and Weston Playhouse Theatre Company.George served as President of the Off-Broadway League from 2007 to 2014. George has served on the League’s board since 1991 and was the League’s Treasurer for over 12 years. George has been actively involved in producing the Lortel Awards for more than 25 years and also served as a member of the Awards Nominating committee for 9 years.
George is a trustee of the Equity League Pension, Health, and 401K Funds, the League ATPAM Pension and has completed the IFEBP Trustee Master Program, served on the board of the Greenwich Village Chelsea Chamber of Commerce, and was a member of the NYU Task Force established by Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer to work with NYU and the Greenwich Village community on its 2031 Development Plan. George is also a member of NYC & Company’s Culture Committee, which works to promote NFP cultural institutions across New York City.

The Lucille Lortel Theatre is pleased to announce the recipients of the 3rd Annual NYC Public High School Playwriting Fellowship, created as an opportunity for aspiring young writers citywide to get unparalleled access to professional theater artists for mentoring. The Fellows and Finalists of the program represent every borough of NYC. Each aspiring playwright submitted an original 10-minute play, and was judged by the following panel of playwrights and directors: Preston Burger, Gethsemane Herron, A.J. Muhammad, Cherry Lou Sy, and Gabriel Vega Weissman. Plays were chosen based on dramatic structure and the playwright's individual voice.

Nominations for the 37th Annual Lucille Lortel Awards for Outstanding Achievement Off-Broadway were announced today by theatre veterans Lilli Cooper and Lea DeLaria, stars of Broadway’s POTUS. With COVID safety in mind, rather than having one host and multiple presenters, this year the Awards will be handed out by a few Host/Presenter pairs on Sunday, May 1, 2022 at NYU Skirball beginning at 7:00pm EST. The Lucille Lortel Awards are produced by the Off-Broadway League and Lucille Lortel Theatre, with additional support provided by TDF.

Cherry Lane Theatre, the oldest continuously running Off-Broadway theatre in New York City, has a new owner, it has been announced by Angelina Fiordellisi, the theatre’s Executive Director since having acquired the building in 1996. Cherry Lane is located at 38 Commerce Street in Greenwich Village.

The 2013 Lucille Lortel Awards for Outstanding Achievement Off-Broadway were handed on Sunday night to recipients in 14 categories and 4 special honors were bestowed. The Lortel Awards were distributed in a ceremony at NYU Skirball Center hosted by acclaimed stage and screen actors Aasif Mandvi and Maura Tierney.
