Jill Eikenberry trained at the Yale School of Drama after leaving Barnard College to pursue acting. She began her career on stage, appearing with Michael Tucker in The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail (1970) and Moonchildren (1971), the latter transferring to Broadway in 1972. She made her screen debut in the television film They've Killed President Lincoln (1971), followed by feature film roles in Between the Lines (1977), A Night Full of Rain (1978), and An Unmarried Woman (1978).
Throughout the 1970s, Eikenberry focused primarily on theater. She made her Broadway debut in All Over Town (1974), appeared Off-Broadway in Uncommon Women and Others, and starred in the musical Onward Victoria (1980).
Eikenberry gained widespread recognition for her role as Ann Kelsey on the legal drama L.A. Law, which she joined in 1986. For her performance, she received five Primetime Emmy Award nominations and four Golden Globe Award nominations, winning the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama in 1989. She and Michael Tucker also appeared together in several television films, including Assault and Matrimony (1987), The Secret Life of Archie's Wife (1990), A Town Torn Apart (1992), and Gone in a Heartbeat (1996).
Her later screen work includes the film Manna from Heaven (2003), guest appearances on Numb3rs (2008), Law & Order (2009), and Body of Proof (2011), and roles in the films Suburban Girl (2007), Something Borrowed (2011), and Young Adult (2011).
In addition to acting, Eikenberry and Tucker produced the PBS documentary Emile Norman: By His Own Design (2008). In 2015, she co-starred with Tucker in The M Spot, a play written by Tucker and presented by the New Jersey Repertory Company. In 2022, she reprised her role as Ann Kelsey in the ABC revival pilot of L.A. Law.
