Dr. Phillips Center Sets 2016 Summer Camps & Workshops

The Dr. Phillips Center Florida Hospital School of the Arts announces the continuation of its award-winning programing and corresponding summer schedule of week-long camps and workshops, taking place at the venue between June and August 2016.

Designed to develop character and confidence while building artistic and presentation skills, the structure offers an immersive experience of class, rehearsal process and performance with diverse curriculum spanning from musical theatre technique, vocal performance, dance and jazz music.

The team of professional teaching artists lending their skill and expertise to the schedule include Broadway veteran Paul Canaan (Kinky Boots, Thoroughly Modern Millie, La Cage Aux Folles) leading the "Take it from the Top" workshop, as well as internationally-renowned bassist and Mack Avenue recording artist Rodney Whitaker, directing the Jazz Music Intensive.

"All of our summer programs are designed to stimulate body, mind and imagination for the artist," says Dana Brazil, the award-winning director of education at the Dr. Phillips Center Florida Hospital School of the Arts. "We are particularly excited to have well-known jazz and Broadway professionals joining us to mentor our students here in Central Florida."

Registration for camps and workshops is currently open. Early registration continues through May 15,

2016. A $25 late registration fee is applied to registration beginning May 16, 2016. Scholarship applications are available upon request by contacting classes@drphillipscenter.org. The deadline for scholarship applications is April 6, 2016. Scholarship auditions and interviews are scheduled for April 13, 2016 at 5:30 p.m.

"Take it from the Top"

Designed by Paul Canaan and Laura Bell Bundy, "Take it from the Top" is an opportunity to learn from a team of experienced theater professionals and casting directors. Students explore the "triple threat" disciplines of music, dance and theater while being provided the opportunity to network with members of the industry.

"Take it from the Top" has two sessions:

June 13 - 17, 2016: Broadway Intensive Workshop, ages 10-19. A final recital will showcase the work students have done for an audience of family and friends on June 17 in the Walt Disney Theater.

June 18 - 19, 2016: Adult Intensive Workshop, ages 19+.

Theater Intensive Workshop

This workshop provides students the opportunity to develop individual acting techniques through script examination, collaboration with fellow scene partners and audience engagement.

June 27 - July 1, 2016: ages 10-14 (Section A); ages 15-19 (Section B). A final recital will showcase the work students have done for an invited audience of family and friends on July 1 in the Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater.

Theater Arts Camp

This workshop encourages the exploration of improvisation, drama, theater games and script work. The emphasis in these sessions is on personal expression, creative imagination, confidence and socialization.

Theater Arts Camp has two sessions, each focusing on different material:

June 20 - 24, 2016: Session 1, ages 7-11. A final recital will showcase the work students have done for an invited audience of family and friends on June 24 in the DeVos Family Room.

August 8 - 12, 2016: Session 2, ages 7-11. A final recital will showcase the work students have done for an invited audience of family and friends on August 12 in the Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater.

Jazz Music Intensive Workshop

Under the direction of Rodney Whitaker, along with national and regional jazz professionals, this workshop is a five-day session, compromised of big band and combo rehearsals, studio class, jazz history, listening and improvisation.

The Jazz Music Intensive Workshop has two sessions:

July 11 - July 15, 2016: ages 14-19. The workshop concludes with two performances: a faculty performance on Thursday, July 14, and a student big band performance on Friday, July 15 in the Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater.

Students must submit a YouTube video to be considered for placement in the Jazz Music Intensive. Submissions will be accepted through June 13 and can be sent to Dana Brazil at dana@drphillipscenter.org. July 16, 2016: ages 19+. This one-day intensive for adults is a new addition to this season's roster of offerings.

Vocal Performance Intensive Workshop

A collaborative learning experience, this workshop offers interpretation principles, vocal techniques and story-telling through development of a sense of musicality.

July 18 - 22, 2016: ages 10-14 (Section A); ages 15-19 (Section B). A final recital will showcase the work students have done for an invited audience of family and friends on July 22 in the Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater.

Dance Intensive Workshop

This weeklong session explores technique, vocabulary and creative choreography through a variety of styles include modern, contemporary, jazz and ballet.

July 25 - July 29, 2016: ages 9-12 (Section A); ages 13-19 (Section B). A final recital will showcase the work students have done for an invited audience of family and friends on July 29 in the Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater.
