The Bach Festival Society Sponsors 18th Annual Young Artist Competition, 11/20

The Bach Festival Society of Winter Park, in partnership with the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, invites high school students to compete in the 18th Annual Young Artist Competition. Prizes are awarded in both the preliminary and finalist rounds for a total of $5,000, one of the largest combined prize winnings in the state. This prestigious competition provides high school vocalists and instrumentalists throughout Florida the exceptional opportunity to prepare for performance before judges who are respected in their field. The winners of this annual all-state competition perform their winning selections at a concert that is free and open to the public, benefiting the community not only by providing an enriching musical experience, but also by offering role models to youngsters and inspiring future art patrons.

This competition, generously sponsored by the Elizabeth Morse Genius Foundation, draws high school students from across Florida to compete in one of four categories: piano, strings, brass/woodwinds, or voice. Competition winners have gone on to study at prestigious schools such as The Juilliard School and Northwestern University, and many now lead successful music careers.

Soprano Janette Zilioli, winner of the First Annual Young Artist Competition, now has a successful performing career and will join the Bach Festival Choir and Orchestra October 23 and 24, 2010, for Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 and the World Premiere of Jaron Lanier's Symphony for Amelia. Ms. Zilioli made her debut at Carnegie Hall at the age of 17 and has since performed nationally and internationally. She is the winner of numerous awards, including two notable fellowships in 2004 and 2008 to the Music Academy of the West to study with Marilyn Horne and Warren Jones.

Eligibility:

Students in grades 9-12 who are Florida residents or who attend a Florida school may compete.
Students in lower grades with prize-winning potential may apply for permission to compete by submitting a 5-7 minute CD and teacher letter of recommendation with their application. Previous grand-prize winners of this competition and students under professional management may not compete.

Competition:

Students may compete in one of four categories: piano, strings, brass/woodwinds, or voice.
Instrumentalists should prepare one selection; vocalists, two contrasting selections. Selections should be appropriate classical music for the instrument and must be performed from memory. Total performance time may not exceed 7 minutes. Participants are responsible for honoring the 7-minute time limit, making appropriate edits where necessary. Participants must provide one original copy of music showing any edits. Photocopies are unacceptable. Participants must provide their own accompanist.
