Challenging the conventions and limits of ideas of nature and culture, Ursula von Rydingsvard's monumental sculptures of cedar and cast materials have established her as a distinctive presence in the landscape of international sculpture. Published on the occasion of a traveling retrospective exhibition that opened at SculptureCenter in January, this volume comprehensively surveys more than thirty years of the artist's continuing explorations in form and process, from early installations at outdoor public art spaces to her most recent monumental sculptures.

Essentially abstract, von Rydingsvard's work frequently references familiar forms, from mountains to simple tools and bowls. Consistent throughout her work, aggressive cuts and delicate lines leave an indelible trace of human touch and intention. In a penetrating volume essay, Patricia C. Phillips, explores how the artist's interest in simple forms, her respect for organic materials and the dignity of labor, and the sense of loss and persistent memories that inform her work, may be traced back to the artist's early experiences as a child of war-torn Poland and her family's subsequent emigration to the United States. Phillips goes on to chronicle the artist's remarkable engagement with form and material across more than thirty years of work. A selection of process shots, drawings, and views of works in various stages of construction lends additional context and a sense of the process behind the artist's intensely physical and deeply personal art.
