ZORBA in Broadway ZORBA
New Line Theatre
3/2-3/25/2017
It's 1924, on the Greek island of Crete, and you're about to go on a wild, whirlwind tour of the passions of the human heart. For the vagabond philosopher Zorba, every minute of life must be lived as if death were around the corner, with no time to be wasted, raising his eyes to the Crete sky, spreading open his arms, and kicking out his feet as if he could surely ascend to heaven if he worked enough at it. New Line continues its 26th season with ZORBA, the rarely produced gem from the legendary songwriting team, John Kander and Fred Ebb, who brought us Cabaret, Chicago, Kiss of the Spider Woman (all of which New Line has produced), The Scottsboro Boys, The Visit, Woman of the Year, Steel Pier, The Act, etc., and from bookwriter Joseph Stein (Fiddler on the Roof, The Baker’s Wife, Rags). ZORBA is a rowdy, high-energy, deeply emotional fable about learning to live life out loud, based on the famous 1946 novel Zorba the Greek by Nikos Kazantzakis, its 1964 film version, and also letters that Kander and Ebb found from the real-life Zorba.

Never the Sinner in Broadway NEVER THE SINNER
Wool Studio Theater
3/16-4/2/2017
Chicago, 1924. Clarence Darrow is defending Nathan Leopold Jr., age 18, and Robert Loeb, age 19, in the “Crime of the Century.” The two had decided to commit the “perfect murder,” just for the thrill of it. Considering themselves Nietzsche’s übermensch (supermen), they concluded they were removed from the moral and social imperatives of the world. They brutally murdered 14-year-old Bobby Franks but were quickly apprehended. Darrow’s defense of them was an eloquent plea against capital punishment. This exquisite play asks what demons lurked in the minds of these two young men and the complex relationship between them. This is a love story set to themes of crime and punishment, the press, the times, humanism, Nietzsche’s philosophy and the end of the jazz age. Directed by Rick Dildine, starring Pete Winfrey, Jack Zanger, John Flack, Eric Dean White, Maggie Conroy, Will Bonfiglio, John Reidy. Thirty minute talkbacks will be scheduled after the March 23 and March 30 performances with historians/legal professionals/actors.
